First Look at LG BD670

May 16, 2011

From the start of Blu ray technology, LG has always been one of the first companies to adapt new technology and features into their Blu ray players. They were one of the first to offer hybrid HDDVD/Blu ray player along with full featured Blu ray players. LG was also one of the first to integrate internet streaming contents on their player. With most of the Blu ray players performing on similar level, it is the extra features that differentiate the players. With a head start in internet streaming contents, LG has firmly established itself as a big player in Blu ray player market.

Features

Electronics manufacturers have jammed more and more features into their Blu ray players. LG is no exception. They’ve always packed more features into their Blu ray players from early on. The BD670 is also a feature packed 2011 model. Like other manufacturers, LG has introduced multiple Blu ray player models in 2011. The BD670 is the second most expensive player introduced by LG in 2011. Like its predecessors, the BD670 is Profile 2.0 player with full complement of audio decoding capability. As expected, it is capable of displaying 3D contents as well as the traditional 2D contents. BD670 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD Master Audio. The standard MP3, AC3, and AAC are also decoded natively on the player. The video format decoding capability is impressive as well. It can decode DivX, MPEG2 TS/PS, AVCHD, Xvid, and MKV. LG’s Smart TV platform allows for customization and easy access to variety of internet streaming contents. With Smart TV, you can download different apps and customize them to your liking. Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, YouTube, Pandora, Picasa, and AccuWeather are few of the apps you can use to access internet streaming contents. You can access the internet via Ethernet port or the integrated WiFi capability.

Design

The overall design is fairly straight forward. At this stage, it’s hard to reinvent the wheel in terms of disc player design. The disc tray is located on the left with LCD and playback buttons and USB port on the right. Touch sensitive button would have been a nice design touch. Otherwise, the glossy finish neither spectacular nor dull. As with a lot of the newer Blu ray players, the BD670 lacks multi channel analog outputs. Instead, it comes with L/R audio out along with Digital and optical audio out. It does come with legacy video connection in the form of composite and component video out. Regrettably, the BD670 comes with one HDMI port instead of two. The included remote is pretty standard. The buttons are large enough and the placements are well thought out. However, it lacks few direct buttons for feature apps like Netflix. Like Sony, you can download remote control apps via Android or iOS device.

Video and Performance

The video processing of Blu ray and DVD discs were flawless. You will not notice any video defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur. Spot tested with three different Blu ray discs, the BD670 showed no defects in any of the scenes. Also, the DVD upscaling and playback was very crisp on high definition television. While the overall video processing was spot on, the overall loading speed and operational speed was somewhat lacking on the BD670. While it’s not as horrendous as the first or second generation players, the BD670 definitely trails behind other Blu ray players in terms of overall speed. From power up to actually starting a Blu ray disc, it was noticeably slower than some of the other players.

Audio

Like video processing, the audio processing was spot on as well. The overall sound qualities should reflect your television’s speaker or the receiver and speaker combination. The BD670 decoded all the audio formats properly and without any hitch. Even the MP3 and other audio formats played without any problem. You should not have any problem with the BD670 in audio department except for the lack of multichannel analog output.

Final Thoughts

The BD670 is another great addition to the LG’s Blu ray player product line. LG has always produced some of the best Blu ray players on the market and BD670 is no exception. The inclusion of 3D and the abundant internet streaming contents make the BD670 one of the best Blu ray player on the market. However, the loading speed was somewhat bothersome. We expected faster loading time for the LG’s newest Blu ray players. Also, the lack of second HDMI might pose some problem for people with older receivers. All in all, the BD670 is an excellent Blu ray player from LG.

Detail Look: Review of Samsung BD D5700

May 3, 2011

Samsung BD-D5700 is something of anomaly in its place in Samsung’s Blu ray player line up. Wedged between the BD-D5500 and BD-D6500, it is the middle tier Blu ray player according to Samsung. However, the BD-D5700 is the only new Samsung player in 2011 to exclude 3D playback despite being more expensive than the BD-D5500. This looks like a player for those that don’t really need 3D playback capability and still want a full featured 2011 model.

Features

From low end to high end models, the Samsung Blu ray players all have similar set of features. The only differentiation between BD-D5500 and BD-D5700 is the inclusion of WiFi and exclusion of 3D playback on BD-D5700. As with the other Samsung Blu ray players, the BD-D5700 is a Profile 2.0 player fully compatible with BD-LIVE content. It can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD, and DTS. You will not need to purchase separate receiver for audio decoding. Like other Samsung players, it comes with Samsung Smart Blu Ray Player. The internet streaming option is very extensive on the Smart Blu ray players from Samsung. You can connect to various internet streaming contents via Samsung apps. Netflix, Blockbuster, YouTube, and Pandora are some of the few internet streaming contents you can access via BD-D5700. Also, there are news feed services as well as social media updates like Facebook and Twitter. You also have access to some simple games like Monopoly and poker. The inclusion of WiFi is the primary upgrade from the BD-D5500 model.

Design

The overall design of BD-D5700 is fairly straight forward. It doesn’t emulate BD-D6700 or BD-D7500 in terms of stylish design. However, it is not a bad looking player. The overall glossy finish to the player makes it fairly nice. However, it does attract dust more than other finishes. The big LCD and playback buttons are located nicely in the middle with the USB port on the right side. There is a cover for the USB port as well. The BD-D5700 comes with the standard 2 channel audio output as well as optical digital audio output. Samsung has smartly opted not to include legacy output such as s-video or component outputs. Most buyers have no reason to use those outputs on their HDTV. As expected, a HDMI port is included as well. As the BD-D5700 cannot play 3D contents, you do not really need the second HDMI port as you would on 3D Blu ray players. The included remote is functional at best. You would be better off getting a nice universal remote if you have more than few home theater components.

Performance and Video

The overall speed of BD-D5700 is adequate. While it is not as fast as some of the other players, it is more than adequate for most users. It is about 5-10 seconds slower than Sony or Panasonic Blu ray players in terms of loading Blu ray discs from power up. The video processing was flawless on Blu ray and DVD playbacks. The usual moiré, motion blur, and jaggieness were all missing from the Blu ray and DVD playback. The spot checks revealed no defects on DVD playback as well as Blu ray discs. The Samsung player has always been great at decoding various video formats including MKV and Divx formats. The BD-D5700 was no exception. It played MKV file without any problems.

Audio

All the audio formats properly decoded. The high definition audio format and standard formats had no problems with onboard decoding. The lack of multi channel audio output was the only down side if you needed them in the first place. The lack of second HDMI was no problem was this player cannot play any 3D discs.

Final Thoughts

As stated earlier, the player sits between the low end and high end player. The exclusion of 3D capability might be aimed at consumers who have no desire to have a 3D television set. As the 3D technology is relatively new, Samsung has opted to give consumers option to purchase a player without a 3D capability. However, the price point should be lower than the entry level player with the 3D capability even with the inclusion of the WiFi. Other than that, the BD-D5700 is another solid effort from Samsung.

Why Buy Sony BDP S580? Read our review

April 28, 2011

Sony BDP-S580 replaces the BDP-S570 from 2010. The BDP-S570 was the high end model back in 2010. The BDP-S570 was full featured player with all the decoding options as well as some limited internet streaming contents. Sony was one of the last manufacturers to fully jump on the internet streaming contents on the Blu ray players. While it did add internet streaming contents, it was not as varied as other manufacturers. The BDP-S570 took a step in the right direction adding more contents. Even with limited internet streaming contents, the Sony players have always had great picture qualities. The BDP-S580 adds more features as well as some improvement in performances.

Features

It is very hard to differentiate the 2011 Blu ray models in terms of performances. You will be hard pressed to find one that has any artifacts or defects in video or audio processing. The main differentiation comes from the features and prices. The BDP-S580 does offer up very nice array of features for around $200 MSRP. With BDP-S380 as an exception, all other Sony Blu ray players are 3D capable. Like other 2011 models, the BDP-S580 comes with Sony’s own BRAVIA internet Video platform. You have access to Netflix, YouTube, HuluPlus, Pandora, and many other streaming contents. According to Sony, you have access to over 30 internet streaming contents via BRAVIA Internet Video. Unlike the BDP-S380, the BDP-S580 comes with built in WiFi capability. This should be a big plus for anyone who wants less clutter around their home theater system. Like other Sony players, Gracenote metadata service is included to provide full information on the movie you are watching. This is handy little to use if you have any question about the content while watching the movie. The BDP-S580 has onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Also, it is capable of decoding the standard Dolby and DTS audio formats. It is also capable of playing the standard MP3, AAC, WMA, and DTS standard audios. As with BDP-S380, the BDP-S580 lacks 5.1 or 7.1 channel analog audio outputs.

Design

The overall dimension and design of BDP-S580 is identical to that of BDP-S380. The front face has glossy finish with LCD located on the right side with playback function buttons located right beneath it. The USB port is located on the right side as well. The loading tray is located on the left side of the player. The overall dimension of 17 x 1.4 x 7.8 Inches is exactly same as the BDP-S380. The BDP-S580 comes with basic output options like component and composite output as well as coaxial audio outputs. The Ethernet, USB, and HDMI ports are standard as well. As noted earlier, it does not come with multi channel analog outputs. Extra HDMI port is conspicuously missing. If you have older receiver, you might need to output audio via digital audio output if you want to watch 3D contents. The included remote control should be sufficient for most people. The button lay out are well thought out and the buttons are large enough for most people. Sony added remote app for Iphone and android phones to control their Blu ray player for extra convenience.

Performance and Video

As noted in BDP-S380 review, Sony has dramatically improved the average load time on their 2011 Blu ray player models. It is significantly faster than the first or second generation Blu ray players. The longest loading time for a Blu ray movie was less than 15 seconds. The overall video processing was excellent as expected. The movies showed no processing defects like jaggieness, motion blur, or moiré. While the Blu ray movies and DVD movies played flawlessly, the internet streaming contents weren’t as nice even with high speed internet. While this is not Sony’s fault, I would love to see more high definition contents from the internet streaming services. After watching Blu ray movies, the internet streaming quality seems very average at best. The problem of playing MKV and Divx files are still present on the BDP-S580 as it did on the BDP-S380 model.

Audio

The audio processing was flawless as well. All the audio formats decoded properly without any hitch. The MP3, AAC, and WMA all played without any problems. I did not test DVD audio or SACD as I do not have them for compatibility test. Only downside of this player was the lack of multi-channel output and the lack of extra HDMI port.

Final Thoughts

As of this review, this player can be purchased for around $170 at most retailers. This is fairly good price for a high end model. The 3D capability and inclusion of WiFi makes this a big improvement over the BDP-S380. While BDP-S380 is capable of WiFI, you had to buy extra equipment to make it truly wireless. For extra $30 or so, you get 3D as well as built in WiFi. This is pretty good value for a solid Blu ray player.

New Samsung Review: BD D6700 Blu Ray Player

April 25, 2011

Samsung BD-D6700 set itself apart from other 2011 Blu ray players with its stylish design and extra HDMI output port. With most Blu ray players performing on even level, manufacturers are trying very hard to differentiate their player from other Blu ray players. Along with other manufacturers, Samsung has loaded up on the additional features as well as a very stylish design. As with most other 2011 players, the main feature/upgrade from previous year is the ability to play 3D contents as well as the traditional 2D discs.

Features

The BD-D6700 does not skimp on any features. It is a BD-LIVE compatible player fully compliant with Profile 2.0 specification. As with other Samsung Blu ray players, it can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD, and DTS. You will not need separate receiver for audio decoding. The extensive internet app seen on other Samsung players are present in the BD-D6700. With Samsung Apps, you can customize which contents you want to access via internet. Samsung Apps cover news from ESPN and various other news feeds. Also, you have access to Hulu, YouTube, Vudu, and Netflix for movies and television series. As with other Samsung players, you can play simple games like Monopoly and poker. There are various other apps you can download and customize. The inclusion of built in WiFi was nice upgrade from the earlier models. Samsung periodically adds and update the list of apps. The BD-D6700 comes with built in WiFi for easy access to the internet if you have wireless network.

Design

The overall design and finish is very atypical. Instead of standard black finish, the BD-D6700 comes with silver finish to go along with its stylish design. Instead of loading tray, the BD-D6700 comes with slot loading mechanism. The LCD is located beneath the slot loader with touch sensitive buttons located on the right side of the LCD. You also get a front USB port with its own door to keep the slick appearance. The back of the player houses the dual HDMI port along with component video out. On the audio side, it comes with regular audio out as well as optical and digital audio output.

Performance and Video

As most Blu ray players handle video processing without any hitch, it is becoming very difficult to see any video processing errors in today’s Blu ray player. The main focus is on the loading speed as well as few other features like video processing. The BD-D6700 is quite fast compared to older generation players when it comes to load time. However, it is little slower than few other competitors. If 5 to 10 seconds is to long of wait for Blu ray disc, you might want to consider other brands that support faster load times. Other than below average load time, the BD-D6700 is a flawless player when it comes to video processing. I’ve spot tested 2 different Blu ray movies with no apparent processing defects like moiré, jaggieness or motion blurs. There were no issues with colors or any other video processing when tested against different player on same television. The ability to decode almost any formats was another big plus. Some players have hard time decoding MKV formats as well as different divx formats. However, the BD-D6700 handled them without any difficulties or needing a fix on my personal computer. The overall DVD upscaling was spot on without losing too much video quality.

Audio

All the audio formats properly decoded. The high definition audio format had no problem with onboard decoding. The lack of multi channel audio output shouldn’t be problem for the targeted consumer. The inclusion of 2 HDMI is designed specifically for the people with an A/V receiver. Samsung knew their target audience and designed this player with them in mind.

Final Thoughts

The inclusion of 2 HDMI should be a big bonus for the people who cannot pass HDMI 1.4 signals through their receivers. You can output the video via one HDMI and the audio to receiver via another HDMI port. As of this review, the BD-D6700 is still one of the more expensive main stream Blu ray player on the market. Most other players can be had for significantly less than the BD-D6700. For around $150.00, you can buy another Samsung player with same features minus the extra HDMI port. However, if you want a slick looking player with extra HDMI port, this might be the right player for you.

Sony BDP S380 Review: Better than S370?

April 25, 2011

Sony BDP-S380 replaces the popular BDP-S370 model from 2010. The BDP-S370 was a solid entry level Blu ray player. Sony introduced the BD-S370 at 2010 CES and it quickly became a great performer at a modest price. As with 2010 models, Sony upgraded all their Blu ray players from entry level to high end models. The BDP-S380 is the direct successor to the BDP-S370. As with BDP-S370, the BDP-S380 model is not compatible with 3D contents. This is somewhat disappointing as other manufacturers have decided to include 3D playback on their entry level models as well as their high end models.

Features

Even as an entry level model, the BDP-S380 boasts impressive amount of features. In the past, Sony lacked some of the extra features found on other players. Even as a driving force behind the Blu ray technology, Sony lagged behind other manufacturers in terms of features. However, Sony always delivered quality video and audio playback functions. While older Sony models lacked the internet streaming contents, the 2010 and 2011 models all come with internet streaming features. The BDP-S380 is able to stream Neflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus, Pandora and other internet streaming contents. On top of the streaming contents, Sony has added iPhone and Android remote application. The remote application allows you to control the Blu ray player as well as displaying movie information. Also, Gracenote metadata service is included to provide full information on the movie you are watching. At first, I didn’t think it was useful tool. However, you can instantly look up all the information about the movie without having to go to your computer to look up the information. As expected, the BDP-S380 is fully compliant with Profile 2.0 and BD-LIVE contents. The BDP-S370 has onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Also, it is capable of decoding the standard Dolby and DTS audio formats. It is also capable of playing the standard MP3 files as well as SACD format discs. While the player is capable on audio options, it does not have any 5.1 or 7.1 analog audio outputs.

Sony BDP-S380 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) Sony BDP-S380 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black)
Sale Price: $60.95

Design

The overall design is fairly similar to the BDP-S370. The front of the player is finished in glossy material. The LCD is located on the right side with few playback function buttons right below it. It also houses a USB port on the right side of the player. The left side of the player houses the loading tray for the disc. The overall dimension and weight is very close to the BDP-S370 as well. The connectivity option is identical to the BDP-S370. The player includes basic analog audio output as well as coaxial audio digital output. For the standard definition television owners, you can connect the player via component or composite outputs. You also have Ethernet and another USB port. It is lacking the second HDMI output. Sony includes a basic remote control. It is fairly functional unit and most users shouldn’t have problem operating it. The buttons are large enough with good layout. Nothing seems to be out of place and few dedicated function buttons are convenient as well.

Performance and Video

Sony has once again delivered a very fast player. The average load time is significantly faster than the older generation models. The BDP-S370 was light years ahead of first and second generation models in terms of loading speed. The BDP-S380 is no exception. It delivers a very fast performance in terms of loading times. The video processing showed no processing defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur. Most of today’s Blu ray player will deliver flawless video processing. I’ve yet to see any significant video processing errors in 2010 or 2011 models from major manufacturers. Spot tested with an action movie, the BDP-S380 handled the movie without any problem. The aspect ratio problem seen on BDP-S370 in DVD playback is corrected. I’ve yet to see any defects when playing DVD in the BDP-S380. The BRAVIA internet streaming contents were acceptable at best. Compared to Blu ray quality, the streaming quality is not as crisp. This is same on other player as well. Unlike some of its competitors, the BDP-S380 had problem playing some of the file formats like MKV and Divx encoded files.

Audio

As with BDP-S370, audio processing had no hiccups. All the audio formats were tested via Blu ray discs and they all played without any hitch. Even the MP3 formats played without any problem. I could not test the SACD compatibility as I didn’t have a disc on hand to test them. However, I don’t expect any problem playing the disc if you have a collection of SACDs. The lack of 5.1 or 7.1 channel shouldn’t be a big problem for most users.

Overall

As of this review, the player can be bought for under $150. While this represents fairly decent deal for a fast Blu ray player, the lack of 3D support makes it hard to justify buying this model. For $150 or little more, you can easily purchase a Blu ray player with all these features and 3D compatibility. Also, the lack of WiFi means you’ll need to buy an adapter for extra money. If you want a quality non 3D Blu ray player, this is definitely a great buy. However, you’ll definitely want to avoid this player if you intend to purchase a 3D television set in the near future.

Detail Review of Oppo BDP 93

March 30, 2011

It would not be a stretch to say that Oppo BDP-83 is the best Blu ray player on the market right now. Even after year and a half, the Oppo BDP-83 stands as one of the most well reviewed Blu ray players on the market. Oppo waited until Profile 2.0 became standard and released a true universal player that worked flawlessly. Also, the picture quality and overall performance was well ahead of its competitor’s offerings. While little late to the Blu ray player market, Oppo made sure to release a quality product for the home theater enthusiasts. Again, Oppo is little late to the internet streaming and 3D functionality. The BDP-93 incorporates 3D and internet streaming into a very well performing Blu ray player.

Features

With Oppo BDP-93, Oppo has once again created a true standalone player. As with Oppo BDP-83, the BDP-93 is capable of playing DVD, audio CD, HDCD, AVCHD, Kodak picture CD, MP3, Divx, MKV, FLAC, WAV, and most other video and audio formats. The Oppo BDP-93 also supports SACD as well as DVD-Audio formats. You can load these formats via USB or eSATA drives or physical DVD discs. Oppo is one of the first to incorporate eSATA port on its Blu ray players. More importantly, Oppo BDP-93 adds internet streaming as well as 3D support. As with BDP-83, the BDP-93 is Profile 2.0 player fully compatible with BD-LIVE content. The addition of 3D and internet streaming is a welcome addition. The BDP-93 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD, and DTS Digital audio formats. You will not need additional receiver in order enjoy high definition audio formats. As with BDP-83, the BDP-93 includes 7.1 channel analog output on top of the digital optical and coaxial outputs. The PAL and NTSC conversion is retained from the older model as well.

Design

The overall design exudes quality high end finish. Overall construction and finish is very well done. The tray is located in the middle with the LCD offset to the left and playback and ejects buttons located on the right. The tray and LCD has glossy finish while the surrounding area is finished in brushed metal material. This gives it a unique high end look. When you unpack the player, you will immediately notice the weight of the player. Coming in it at well over 17 pounds, it is a lot heavier than most other Blu ray players. The connectivity includes 2 HDMI ports, eSATA port, 2 USB ports, Ethernet port, digital optical and coaxial audio ports, and the 7.1 channel analog output port, IR, and RS232 port. The inclusion of RS232 and IR makes it a truly universal player. The player comes with a wireless N-adapter for wireless streaming. The remote control has very well placed large buttons in logical places. The remote control lights up when you push any buttons. This will drain the battery quicker than most other remotes that have the light on and off modes. Otherwise, the included remote is very functional and easy to use.

Performance

Oppo BDP-93 is lightening fast in everything it does. The boot up and load time is very fast. You do not need to wait for it to boot up or wait long time for a Blu ray disc to load. The Oppo BDP-83 is still considered one of the fastest players on the market even after 1.5 years into its life cycle. Oppo BDP-93 is no exception. Even the differing video and audio formats loaded fast and without any problems. MKV and Divx files played flawlessly on the player as well as SACD and DVD-Audio formats. The overall picture processing was spot on as well. For BDP-93, Oppo has integrated the Marvell’s Kyoto-G2 processor. This is a premium video processing chip that ensures the highest video playback across all formats. While more intensive testing might show improvements, I could not honestly discern difference between the BDP-83 and BDP-93 in terms of video processing quality. Tested with 2 different Blu ray movies, Oppo BDP-93 showed no artifacts and video processing defects in any part of the movie. As with BDP-83, the BDP-93 has one of the best DVD upconversion on the market.

The dual HDMI 1.4 output was a very welcomed addition to the BDP-93. For the people with a receiver that cannot process HDMI 1.4 specs, this is a godsend addition. Most of the older receivers are not HDMI 1.4 spec compatible. This means you could not pass HDMI 1.4 signals through the receiver. While this has not been a problem in the past, the 3D contents require HDMI 1.4 spec in order to display the 3D contents. This required most consumers to bypass their receiver set up in order to enjoy the 3D content. With 2 HDMI outputs, you can output video source directly to television while outputting the audio to the receiver via other HDMI port. There are very few Blu ray player on the market with 2 HDMI port.

Sale Price: $499.99

Audio

The overall audio performance is as expected from Oppo player. All of the advertised audios decoded without any problem. The SACD and DVD-Audio played without any hitch. The inclusion of FLAC playback was another big bonus for lossless listening crowd.

Overall

Oppo BDP-93 rectifies few complaints I had on the BDP-83 player. BDP-93 includes the wireless capability as well as internet streaming contents. While internet streaming content is limited to Netflix and Blockbuster video on demand, it does add two of the most popular streaming services. The inclusions of other applications like Youtube and news feed would have been nice.
Weighing in at $499, it is not the cheapest player on the market. But, you get one of the best performing Blu ray player on the market. If you are home theater enthusiasts, spending extra few hundred dollars might be well worth it to have one of the best Blu ray players on the market.

Blu Ray Player Review: Samsung BD C7900

January 26, 2011

Samsung’s BD-C7900 is the high end 3D Blu ray player. Out of the four 3D Blu ray player models offered, the BD-C7900 demands the premium price over the other models. Built on same foundation, the BD-C7900 provides similar performances across the board. It is not surprising that the BD-C7900 mirrors the BD-C6800 in performance and feature sets.

Features

The BD-C7900 is fully compliant with the Profile 2.0 specification. It is compatible with BD-LIVE contents as well as Bonus View features on the Blu ray discs. The BD-C7900 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS, and DTS HD audio formats. Like the previous models, Samsung App delivers variety of internet streaming contents you via Samsung App store. For movies and television shows, you can access Vudu, Netflix, and Hulu plus. Hulu plus lets you stream some of the shows from ABC, Fox, and NBC. Also, Pandora and YouTube are available for video and music streams. You can also download many games like Monopoly or Texas Hold-em poker from the app store. You can get your weather and news feed from the USA Today and AccuWeather. There are many more apps you can download and customize for your needs. With the included WiFi functionality, connecting to the internet should be breeze if you have wireless networking available.

Design

The BD-C7900 has the same overall design as the BD-C6900. The dimensions are slightly bigger to accommodate the extra HDMI output. The LCD is located in the middle of the player with the disc tray on the left side. The top side of the left has the see through feature that displays the disc. The top right side includes all the playback functions available should you lose the remote. The back of the player houses all the connectivity. It includes 2chhanel audio output, component video, optical and digital audio outputs, USB 2, and 2 HDMI outputs. The extra HDMI output is there to accommodate the older receivers not capable of passing HDMI 1.4 signals. The 3D contents require HDMI 1.4 specification. Most of the older receivers cannot accommodate the HDMI 1.4 specification. You can essentially output the video directly to the television while outputting the audio via the extra HDMI port to the receiver. This solves a lot the headache faced by the people with older receivers. The included remote is adequate at best. The button outplays were pretty good and most buttons were placed in the logical spots.

Performance

The BD-C7900 has similar performance as the other 3D Blu ray player models from Samsung. The overall loading time is fantastic. The BD-C7900 takes less than 15 seconds to boot up and load a Blu ray disc. Like the other Samsung players, there is nothing to complain about the picture quality. Tested with two Blu ray movies, the BD-C7900 showed no video processing defects. The movie did not display any moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur defects. The DVD upscaling was spot on as well. While it is nowhere near as good as the Blu ray contents, it was definitely step up from the regular DVD player.

Audio

There was nothing noticeable with audio decoding. All of the audio formats decoded properly. The high definition audio formats had no problem being decoded natively. The output of audio source via one HMDI and video via another worked flawlessly. The inclusion of extra HDMI does deprive it of an analog multichannel output. But, that is to be expected. If you need the 7.1 channel output, go with the BD-C6900. The BD-C6900 is an identical player except the 7.1 channel output instead of extra HDMI port.

Final Thoughts

Samsung has another outstanding player on its hand. I’m especially impressed by the inclusion of extra HDMI port for the people who might have older receivers. This solves the big problem faced by the people who have the HDMI 1.3 receiver. The 3D contents cannot be carried via the HDMI 1.3 specification. The inclusion of internal memory as well as the built in WiFi was excellent inclusion. Overall, this is a highly recommended top of the line Blu ray player.

Unbiased Review of Samsung BD C7500

January 26, 2011

Apparently, there was some success with the Samsung BD-P4600 in 2009. The uniquely designed Blu ray player offered all the necessary features while making the Blu ray player wall mountable. The overall design of BD-C7500 is nothing like any other players. Samsung is the only major manufacturer to offer up a Blu ray player capable of being mounted on the wall. This should appeal to consumers who want a clutter less home theater system.

Features

The set of features are fairly similar to the Samsung’s own BD-C6500. The BD-C7500 is a Profile 2.0 player capable of playing all the Profile 2.0 contents. The player is capable of natively decoding Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS, and DTS HD formats. The BD-C7500 comes loaded with Samsung app. You can choose from wide array of different apps to run on the BD-C7500. You have access to internet streaming services from Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu Plus. Also, you can download simple games like Monopoly and Texas Hold’em poker. For news and weather, you can access USA Today or AccuWeather apps. There are other apps you can download from Samsung’s own Samsung App Store. The BD-C7500 is WiFi ready out of the box. It comes with the WiFi adapter required for the wireless access. Unlike some of the newer Samsung Blu ray players, the BD-C7500 does not come with DLNA compliance. Instead, it uses the older feature called AllShare to access various media files from other devices.

Design

The overall dimension from the BD-P4600 is carried over to the BD-C7500. The smaller and more compact design is obviously there to accommodate the wall mounting functionality. While the dimension is similar to BD-P4600, the overall presentation of BD-C7500 is different. Instead of round edges, the BDC7500 supports sharp rectangular shape. Also, gone are Touch of Color scheme. Instead, the player is finish in wood pattern finish. This gives it a more organic look than the glossy finish on most other players. As expected, the smaller form factor precludes any multi channel analog outputs. Instead, the BD-C7500 will come with 2 channel audio output as well as optical and digital audio outputs. It also comes with mandatory HDMI and 1 USB 2.0 port.

Performance

The overall performance of BD-C7500 is remarkably similar to the BD-C6500. The load time is less than 15 seconds for most Blu ray discs. This is big step up from the older generation Blu ray players that took forever to load. The BD-C7500 took less than 40 seconds from power up to disc load. Tested with three different Blu ray movies, the BD-C7500 showed no defects. It showed no moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur in any scenes. The bonus contents including Profile 2.0 contents played without any problems. The upscaling of DVD discs showed some signs of degradation as expected. While not as great as some of the top upscaling players, the overall image looked great on the big screen. Overall, the video processing was top notch compared to older generation players.

Audio

The BD-C7500 decoded all the audio formats without any problems. Even the high definition audio formats decoded natively without any problems. The MP3 and AVCHD also had pretty good playback. You shouldn’t have any problem with Blu ray movies that contain high definition audio formats.

Overall

The BD-C7500 is really a niche Blu ray player. Most consumers will not require a player that needs to be mounted on the wall. However, those that want to have stream lined home theater setup, this is just the player. In fact, it is the only player that is specifically designed to be mounted on the wall. The inclusion of WiFi adapter really adds to the overall value as you don’t want too many wires going in and out of the wall mounted player. As of this review, the player can be had for around $200.00. If you need a mountable player, this player should provide a perfect solution.

Sony BDP S770 Blu Ray Player Review

January 25, 2011

Sony’s high end Blu ray disc model, BDP-S770, packs small bit of extra features as well and a slick new design. The BDP-S770 is a 3D compatible player with Profile 2.0 compatibility. The BDP-S770 will be fully able to display all the Profile 2.0 contents without limitations. In terms of features and performance, the BDP-S770 is almost identical to the BDP-S570 from Sony. Like BDP-S570, BDP-S770 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital +, Doldby True HD, DTS, DTS-HD, and DTS-HD MA. It can also output these in bitstream as well. On top of these audio formats, the BDP-S770 can also read MP3, AAC, SACD, and WMA audio files. The BDP-S770 also comes with the Bravia Internet Entertainment platform. The Bravia Internet Entertainment platforms works a lot like Samsung App. You can download various widgets that you want on your player and view them at any time. You have access to many video streaming contents like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video, Netflix, and YouTube. Also, there are other internet accessible contents like Facebook and twitter. You can also access news and weather feeds from various sources like USA Today and Yahoo. Like the previous version, the BDP-S770 is capable of playing mkv, wmv, and divx files. You can stream the files from other DNLA compliant devices or use the USB port to play these files. The BDP-S770 also comes with 1GB internal storage.

Design

The one of few things that separates the BDP-S770 from BDP-S570 is the more refined design. Sony designed the BDP-S770 to match the 3D Bravia HD television sets. While not radically redesigned, it does look sleeker than the BDP-S570 model. The BDP-S770 has a flush design unlike the BDP-S570. The disc tray is located on the left while the LCD is located on the right side. The playback buttons are located on the top right side with USB port located right beneath it. The input and output options are identical to the BDP-S570. For audio, the 2 channel analog audio, coaxial and optical audio outputs are available. For video, composite and component video outputs are available for standard definition. There is 1 HDMI 1.4 compliant port, ethernet port, and 2 USB ports available as well. The lack of second HDMI 1.4 port was disappointing as BDP-S770 is supposed to be the high end model for Sony. The BDP-S770 remote is step up from the BDP-S570 remote control. The included remote control is a backlit whereas the BDP-S570 is not. Overall, the remote control functionality and ease of use is about the same.

Video and Performance

Like BDP-S570, the BDP-S770’s loading time was very fast. The speed of power up and loading Blu ray movie was noticeably faster than most other players. The power up and loading of Blu ray movie disc was less than 10 seconds total time for most movies. The interface is the same one used in the BDP-S570. It is very similar to the PS3 interface.

I could find no fault with the video playbacks. Check for defects using two different Blu ray movie titles, I found no video processing defects. The BDP-S770 lacked any moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur during the playback of the movie. The DVD upscaling was fairly decent as well. While not as good as Oppo, it did deliver fairly nice image quality on upscaled images.

Audio

As with BDP-S570, there was no issue with audio decoding on BDP-S770. All the formats decoded properly with onboard decoding. SACD and MP3 formats had no problem with the playback as well. Overall, audio quality was on par with other mainstream Blu ray players.

Overall

This is an almost identical player to the Sony’s previous model. The Wifi, onboard storage, 2 USB port, and backlit remote control are all pretty impressive. However, the same weakness follows the BDP-S770. Primarily, it lacks addition HDMI 1.4 port. Most of the older receivers will not be compliant with HDMI 1.4 specification for 3D images. The extra port would have solved this problem. Given that this is a premium model, I would have liked to see the extra HDMI port like the Samsung’s high end model. Even with this minor complaint, I can recommend this player as it is a very feature packed player.

Blu Ray Player Review: Samsung BD C6800

January 25, 2011

Like their mainstream Blu ray player models, Samsung introduced more than one 3D Blu ray player models. The BD-C6800 is similar to the BD-6500 in terms of features. The overall performance and features mirror the BD-C6500 except for BD-C6800’s ability to play 3D contents when connected to the 3D television set. Like other 3D Blu ray players, you will need HDMI 1.4 compliant cable and receiver with HDMI 1.4 compliant input if you use the receiver as the central unit in your home theater system.

Features

Like most other new Blu ray players, the BD-C6800 is a BD-LIVE compatible player. It is fully compliant with Profile 2.0 settings. The BD-C6800 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS, and DTS HD audio formats. The BD-C6800 covers all the high definition audio formats available today. The Samsung app covers all the internet streaming contents you need. You have access to Vudu, Netflix for movies. For television shows, you have access to Hulu plus. The Hulu plus lets you stream your favorite television shows from ABC, Fox, and NBC. You also have access to Pandora and YouTube for rest of the internet streaming needs. The Samsung app also includes some basic gaming. You can play simple games like Monopoly and texas holdem poker. You also have nice news service feed from AccuWeather and USA Today. There are various other apps you can download and customize. The inclusion of built in WiFi was nice upgrade from the earlier models.

Design

The BD-C6800 follows exact same form factor as the BD-C6500. At only 39mm, the BD-C6800 is thinner than most other Blu ray players. The dimension and finish are identical to the BD-C6500. The overall glossy finish adds to the overall appearance of the player. The LCD is located in the middle of the player with the playback functions located on the right side of the player. The back of the player houses all the input and output ports. It includes Ethernet, HDMI, and USB port. It also includes all the standard definition AV ports such as Digital and optical audio out. Unlike the BD-C5900, BD-C6800 comes with analog 7.1 channel output. The included remote control is very functional unit. The buttons are well placed and are easy to operate.

Performance and Video

The BD-C6800 takes less than 15 seconds to boot up and load Blu ray disc movie. This is great improvement from previous players that took upwards of 1 minute. Most other new players will have very quick load time compared to older players. The overall picture quality is what would expect from Samsung Blu ray players. The picture quality is exceptional. Tested with two Blu ray movie discs, the BD-C6800 showed no defects during the playback. The movies showed no moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur defects. The DVD upscaling was comparable to other players. While it showed some image distortion from upscaling, it looked nice on the large screen television. Some of the aspect ratio problem present on earlier Samsung Blu ray player was not present in this player.

Audio

All the audio formats properly decoded. The high definition audio format had no problem with onboard decoding. The included 7.1 channel analog output was nice addition from the BD-C5900. The quality of audio mostly depends on the audio equipment and not the actual decoder from the Blu ray player.

Final Thoughts

The overall price and performance of BD-C6800 is excellent. The Samsung app is very nice addition to the player and it provides excellent choice of internet streaming contents. The simple games were nice bonus along with the built in WiFi function. As with other 3D capable Blu ray players, you will have to have HDMI 1.4 compliant cable and receiver if you run your Blu ray player through the receiver. Other than that, the BD-C6800 is a very competent player at a nice price point.
