Blu Ray Review: LG BD640

June 1, 2011

Of the five Blu ray players announced for 2011, only two players were non 3D capable players. The BD630 and BD640 were considered to be low end models without the 3D capability featured on the other three models. While 3D has been the logical next step in home theater entertainment, it is still slow to be adapted by most consumers. Most consumers who have just bought large HDTV are reluctant to upgrade so soon to the 3D models. The lack of 3D contents except on Blu ray seems to have put some stop to the 3D momentum. The BD640 is almost identical to the cheapest LG player, BD630.

Features

Like the BD630, the BD640 is a non 3D Blu ray player. All the core features from BD630 is carried over to the BD640. Essentially, BD640 is almost identical to the BD630. Only true differentiation is the BD640’s ability to use WiFi instead of Ethernet cable for internet connection. The BD640 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital+, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD. Also, it can decode AAC, MP3, and AC3 for the media files you might want to play via your Blu ray player. Like the BD630, the video decoding option is robust as well. It can decode DivX, MPEG2 TS/PS, AVCHD, Xvid, and MKV without having to encode them in more standard formats. The ability to decode these file format should be a great bonus. As with BD630, the BD640 does not come with the SmartTV platform found on the high end LG models. Instead, it comes with some basic internet streaming contents. With BD640, you can access Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, and Youtube. If you just need Netflix, the BD640 should be more than adequate for internet streaming. The BD640 is a wireless enabled player. You do need to purchase the WiFi dongle to enable the WiFi functionality for wireless functions.

Design

Not surprisingly, the dimension and weight are identical to the BD630. The overall design is exact copy of the BD630 model. The disc tray is located on the left side of the player. The LCD and playback function buttons are located on the right side. The location of the USB port’s location is same on BD640 as it was on the BD630. Having USB port at the front should be convenient for most users. You will need to get an external storage device for some BD-LIVE content that require storage spaces. HDMI, Ethernet, Digital and analog audio out, component and composite video are all located on the back of the player.

Performance and Video

The overall speed and performance does not deviate from BD630’s performance. The BD640’s performance typifies 2011 LG Blu ray players. The boot up and load time is little slower than other Blu ray players from Samsung or Sony. While the load time of Blu ray discs suffered a little compare to other players, the DVD performance was less noticeable. Even so, the difference shouldn’t bother most users.
The slow loading speed was the only drawback on the BD640’s performance. The overall video processing performance was spot on. The more expensive model did not outperform the BD640’s performance. The overall difference between the BD690’s video processing and BD640’s processing was nonexistent. That is to say, there were no video processing errors on the BD640. The video processing errors like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur were all missing from the playback of two Blu ray disc movies. While there were some video degradation from DVD upscaling, it was not as bad as some of the earlier Blu ray players.

Audio

The audio decoding performance also mirrored the other LG Blu ray players. The lack of 5.1 or 7.1 channel analog output was the only blemish on BD640’s audio options. Otherwise, the BD640 handled all the audio formats without any problem. The MP3 and AAC audio played fine from the USB thumb drive without any problem.

Overall

As with BD630, the BD640’s lack of WiFi is the only true downside of this player. While the BD640 is wireless enabled, you still need to purchase the WiFi dongle separately. For the price of the dongle, you can easily step up to the next tier Blu ray player and get more features like 3D and more internet streaming options. The inclusion of SmartTV platform would have been nice on this player as some people will not upgrade to 3D television any time soon. Otherwise, this is a very good player in terms of video and audio performance.

Blu-Ray Player Review: LG BD630

May 25, 2011

LG announced more than the usual three Blu ray players for their 2011 models. With 3D technology slowly catching on with the consumers, it was expected most manufacturers to offer up different 3D capable Blu ray players. LG announced three different Blu ray players capable of playing 3D discs as well as two standard non 3D Blu ray players. In total, LG offered up five different Blu ray player to cover low end to high end. LG BD630 is the cheapest of the five offerings from 2011 models.

Features

The BD630 is non 3D capable player. While it can’t play 3D discs, it is fully functional Profile 2.0 player with BD-LIVE content capability. Like the more expensive models, BD630 can decode Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital+, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD. You can also enjoy MP3, AC3, and AAC audio formats from your media files. Also, the video decoding options are very similar to the more expensive models. It can decode DivX, MPEG2 TS/PS, AVCHD, Xvid, and MKV just like the BD670 model. This is one of few lower end models that can natively decode these video formats. One key difference between this model and more expensive model is the lack of SmartTV platform on the BD630. While the BD630 does come with some limited internet streaming contents, it is nowhere near the complete experience of SmartTv. Only the 3D capable players from LG have the SmartTV platform. Never the less, it does come with Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, and Youtube. You will need to hook up the player via ethernet port as it does not come with WiFi capability.

Design

The overall design is pretty straight forward. It doesn’t have any significant design change from the earlier version of the player. The overall dimension is in line with other Blu ray players. The LCD is located on the right side of the player with few playback function buttons. The disc tray is located in the middle of the player. HDMI, Ethernet, Digital and analog audio out, component and composite video are all located on the back of the player. The single USB port is located on the front the player. For some BD-LIVE contents, you will need to get an external storage device.

Performance and Video

As with the other 2011 LG models, the only drawback of BD630 is the lack of speedy loading times. The boot up and loading time is less than stellar on LG models. While it is still very fast, the other Blu ray players have surpassed LG in terms of overall loading speed. The difference is less than 10 seconds on most Blu ray discs and even less on DVD discs.

While the loading and booting speed isn’t as fast as other players, the overall video processing is definitely flawless. The overall video performance was very good on both Blu ray and DVD discs. Spot tested with three different Blu ray movies, the BD630 showed no video processing defects on all three movies. None showed moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur in any scenes including some action heavy movie. While the DVD upscaling wasn’t as good as some of the more expensive players, it was very comparable to the higher end models in most cases. The upscaling of DVDs showed very little video degradation on the high definition television. Even so, you should not expect full Blu ray like experience with the DVD upscaling. The BD630 should be perfectly fine playing any disc formats.

Audio

Except for the absence of 5.1 or 7.1 channel analog outputs, the BD630 does not present any problem in audio department. All the audio formats decoded properly including the high definition audio formats. The MP3 and AAC audio formats played from the USB and from the disc without any problems. Overall, you shouldn’t have any problems with audio formats unless you have some exotic formats.

Overall

From price and performance perspective, the BD630 is a definitely a competent player. While it is not laced with some great features found on more expensive players, it does offer up solid performance with some decent internet streaming contents. While it lacks more comprehensive internet streaming contents found on SmartTV, most users should be satisfied with the internet streaming contents found on BD630. If you can forgo 3D contents as well as WiFi, this is one of the best performing players at any price range. Also, the ability to play variety of media type is truly a big plus for the sub $100 player.

Review: LG BD690

May 19, 2011

The LG BD690 represents the high end Blu ray player from LG’s 2011 Blu ray player line up. As expected, the BD690 comes packed with features and very good overall performance. True to LG’s past Blu ray players, the BD690 comes packed with great internet streaming contents. Being one of the first to introduce internet streaming contents on the Blu ray players, LG has always been one of the top manufacturers to include internet streaming platform on their Blu ray players. The internet streaming contents added to the overall value of LG’s already great performing players.

Features

As befitting the top of the line model, BD690 is packed with features. The Profile 2.0 player comes with 250GB internal storage. You will not need the external storage device to fully enjoy the BD-LIVE contents that require storage spaces. 250GB should be plenty for BD-LIVE contents as well as other media you want to store on the Blu ray player. Aside from the design and the internal storage, the BD690 is nearly identical to the BD670 in terms of features and performance. The BD690 is Profile 2.0 player with onboard decoding of most audio formats. It can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD Master Audio. It can also decode MP3, AC3, and AAC for your downloaded or converted music files. If you do home video editing or convert various video files, you will enjoy having the ability to play them on your BD690 without having to convert them to other standard formats. The BD690 can decode MPEG TS/PS, AVCHD, DivX, and MKV file formats. You can enjoy internet streaming contents via LG’s Smart TV platform. You can easily download and customize streaming contents via the Smart TV. Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, YouTube, Pandora, Picasa, and AccuWeather are part of the overall platform. There are various other apps you can download as well. The BD690 comes with Built in WiFi or you can connect to internet via Ethernet port.

Design

As befitting the top end status, the BD690 does stand out from other players in its design. It has more polished and upscale design compared to the other models. Like some of the older Sony models, the BD690 has the flip down front face plate that covers the entire frontal face of the Blu ray player. The disc tray is located on the left side of the player with playback buttons and LCD on the right side. The USB port is also located beneath the playback buttons. While nothing radical, the flip down front face plate does add some class to the overall design. The included remote control is pretty standard affair. The button layout is logical and big enough for most people.

Performance and Video

In terms of performance and overall speed, the BD690 is nearly identical to the BD670. The overall video processing of Blu ray and DVD discs were flawless. The usual video defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur were absent from the playback. The DVD upscaling was also very good. You will be hard pressed to differentiate between the BD670 and BD690 in video processing. The slower than expected loading and operational speed is present on the BD690 as it did on BD670. You can definitely see some slowness compared to other 2011 Blu ray models from Sony or Panasonic. Never the less, it is not as bad as first or second generation loading speeds. It is still very competent player even with little slowness.

Audio

There were no problems with audio processing. All the formats decoded without any problem. The high definition audio formats all decoded without any problems. MP3, AAC, and AC3 all played perfectly. I’ve yet to see any player that really had problem with audio decoding in 2010 or 2011 models. You shouldn’t have any problem with this player either.

Overall

The BD690 is an impressive player with built in storage. You can rip CDs directly to the hard drive on the player as well. You might have problem with copy right protected media to rip properly. Otherwise, it is a great feature to have. Also, the BD690 is a DLNA certified device if you are looking for a proper networking of the devices. The BD690 can be bought for around $280 at this time. However, if you don’t really need the internet streaming or the internal storage space, you can easily buy the lower end model and still end up with a stellar Blu ray player.

First Look at LG BD670

May 16, 2011

From the start of Blu ray technology, LG has always been one of the first companies to adapt new technology and features into their Blu ray players. They were one of the first to offer hybrid HDDVD/Blu ray player along with full featured Blu ray players. LG was also one of the first to integrate internet streaming contents on their player. With most of the Blu ray players performing on similar level, it is the extra features that differentiate the players. With a head start in internet streaming contents, LG has firmly established itself as a big player in Blu ray player market.

Features

Electronics manufacturers have jammed more and more features into their Blu ray players. LG is no exception. They’ve always packed more features into their Blu ray players from early on. The BD670 is also a feature packed 2011 model. Like other manufacturers, LG has introduced multiple Blu ray player models in 2011. The BD670 is the second most expensive player introduced by LG in 2011. Like its predecessors, the BD670 is Profile 2.0 player with full complement of audio decoding capability. As expected, it is capable of displaying 3D contents as well as the traditional 2D contents. BD670 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD Master Audio. The standard MP3, AC3, and AAC are also decoded natively on the player. The video format decoding capability is impressive as well. It can decode DivX, MPEG2 TS/PS, AVCHD, Xvid, and MKV. LG’s Smart TV platform allows for customization and easy access to variety of internet streaming contents. With Smart TV, you can download different apps and customize them to your liking. Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, YouTube, Pandora, Picasa, and AccuWeather are few of the apps you can use to access internet streaming contents. You can access the internet via Ethernet port or the integrated WiFi capability.

Design

The overall design is fairly straight forward. At this stage, it’s hard to reinvent the wheel in terms of disc player design. The disc tray is located on the left with LCD and playback buttons and USB port on the right. Touch sensitive button would have been a nice design touch. Otherwise, the glossy finish neither spectacular nor dull. As with a lot of the newer Blu ray players, the BD670 lacks multi channel analog outputs. Instead, it comes with L/R audio out along with Digital and optical audio out. It does come with legacy video connection in the form of composite and component video out. Regrettably, the BD670 comes with one HDMI port instead of two. The included remote is pretty standard. The buttons are large enough and the placements are well thought out. However, it lacks few direct buttons for feature apps like Netflix. Like Sony, you can download remote control apps via Android or iOS device.

Video and Performance

The video processing of Blu ray and DVD discs were flawless. You will not notice any video defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur. Spot tested with three different Blu ray discs, the BD670 showed no defects in any of the scenes. Also, the DVD upscaling and playback was very crisp on high definition television. While the overall video processing was spot on, the overall loading speed and operational speed was somewhat lacking on the BD670. While it’s not as horrendous as the first or second generation players, the BD670 definitely trails behind other Blu ray players in terms of overall speed. From power up to actually starting a Blu ray disc, it was noticeably slower than some of the other players.

Audio

Like video processing, the audio processing was spot on as well. The overall sound qualities should reflect your television’s speaker or the receiver and speaker combination. The BD670 decoded all the audio formats properly and without any hitch. Even the MP3 and other audio formats played without any problem. You should not have any problem with the BD670 in audio department except for the lack of multichannel analog output.

Final Thoughts

The BD670 is another great addition to the LG’s Blu ray player product line. LG has always produced some of the best Blu ray players on the market and BD670 is no exception. The inclusion of 3D and the abundant internet streaming contents make the BD670 one of the best Blu ray player on the market. However, the loading speed was somewhat bothersome. We expected faster loading time for the LG’s newest Blu ray players. Also, the lack of second HDMI might pose some problem for people with older receivers. All in all, the BD670 is an excellent Blu ray player from LG.

An Unbiased review: LG BX 580 Blu Ray Player

December 8, 2010

It was inevitable that 3D technology made its way into the consumer electronics. With more films being released in 3D format in conjunction with non 3D formats in theater, it was an easy decision for consumer electronics makers to manufacture 3D capable home theater systems. In the past, 3D technology usually meant wearing the cheap blue and red paper or plastic glasses. Now, the 3D glasses incorporate active shuttle system that syncs with your television sets to display amazing 3D images. While Sony and Samsung were quick to introduce 3D capable Blu ray players, LG was little bit late to the 3D market. However, LG has built up a nice reputation for delivering very solid Blu ray players. The BX 580 is another impressive Blu ray player LG.

Features

The LG BX 580 is packed with features found on most high end models. With the standardization of Profile 2.0, consumers can forgo any worries on Blu ray feature compatibilities. Unless you are buying older models, the Blu ray player will certainly be a Profile 2.0 player. The LG BX 580 is a Profile 2.0 player compatible with all of the Blu ray disc features including the 3D contents. As expected, the LG BX 580 supports all audio formats found on Blu ray discs. It is capable of decoding Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio and LPCM. On top of the regular Blu ray format and DVD format, the BX580 is capable of playing Xvid, VC-1, and MKV formats. Also, the BX580 is capable of playing WMA, MP3, SACD, and AAC audio formats. The BX580 comes with many extra contents. The LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access includes Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, Pandora, Picasa, AccuWeather, and YouTube with internet connection. The integration of WiFi is nice bonus for people with wireless networking. With NetCast Entertainment Access you should be well covered for all internet services. Like other new Blu ray players, LG has opted to phase out the multi channel analog output in favor HDMI only solution. The BX580 is also DNLA certified for easy integration of other DLNA certified devices.

Design

Design wise, the LG BX580 is a beautiful looking player. Overall, the player has flush design without any raised or recessed buttons. The front face plate and overall player has nice glossy finish for elegant look. The front face hides the disc tray as well as the hidden LCD on the right side. The back of the player houses all the connectivity. The connectivity includes composite and component video out as well as the standard HDMI output. The player also comes with Analog audio out as well as optical and coaxial digital output. Even with WiFi, BX580 comes with Rj-45 port. The player does come with 1 USB 2.0 input for pictures and various other media formats. Overall, you shouldn’t have problem with any connectivity issues. The multichannel analog output is the only connectivity missing from this player.

Performance

The big improvement from first generation to second generation players was the overall picture and feature improvements. From second to third generation, manufacturers concentrated on loading time improvements. Now, most of the players have combined all these improvements including the BX580. The loading time is lightening fast. You will not need to sit through 45 seconds from power up to watch a Blu ray movie. Some Java intensive disc used to have problems on the older Blu ray players. This player has no such problem. All the Java contents loaded fast and without any compatibility problems.

As with all the Blu ray players, I updated to the latest firmware before testing out the internet contents. LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access performed as advertised. Netflix and CinemaNow had no problem connecting to the internet and streaming contents. Also, the weather service and YouTube loaded without any problems. The only downside was setting up the DLNA. I did encounter some odd connectivity problem. Powering down the player and router solved the problem after the powering both devices.

Overall, the video processing was flawless. Playing through 2 movies showed no problems. The usual processing defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur were all absent. Unfortunately, I was not able to test the 3D content as you need a television set capable of displaying the 3D images. With the newest players, you should expect flawless picture quality. BX580 was no exception.

Audio

The sound quality was as expected. All the sound formats played without any hitch. The aforementioned lack of multichannel analog output might be problem for people with receivers that need them. The MP3 and various other music formats played correctly off the USB drive without any problems. Overall, the sound format covered by BX580 was impressive.

Overall

The LG BX580 player is an excellent addition to the critically acclaimed LG Blu ray players. While LG did take longer to bring out the 3D model, it was definitely worth the wait. The exceptional performance of non 3D functionality alone makes it worth buying even if you don’t own a 3D television. Once you decide to upgrade to 3D television, you will have excellent Blu ray player capable of handling any 3D contents available today.

Unbiased Review of LG BD550

May 26, 2010

Like Panasonic, LG has opted not to showcase a 3D Blu ray player at 2010 CES. Instead, LG has chosen to focus on the current Blu ray market with the latest offering that mirror the 2009 models. Like 2009 CES, LG offered up three mainstream Blu ray players. The BD550, BD 570 and BD590 were announced. While these three models don’t offer dramatic increase in terms of features over last year’s models, it does offer up small improvements. With the big success of previous Blu ray players, LG has opted to mainly stay with the same formula. This doesn’t mean it’s just rehash. Instead, you can expect some performance improvement and overall feature improvements from the 2009 models.

Features

The BD550 is the entry level model announced at the 2010 CES. Like the previous version, LG BD550 is Profile 2.0 and Profile 1.1 compatible player. You can enjoy all the BD-LIVE contents on the Blu ray discs. On the audio side, BD550 can natively decode Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD audio formats. LG was one of the first to offer up internet streaming content on their Blu ray players. It’s no surprise that LG is once again offering a robust Internet streaming content on the BD550. With NetCast, you can access Roxio Cinema Now, Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, Pandora, Picasa, and AccuWEather.com reports with internet connection. Like other new players, LG is touting faster boot and load time over previous versions. Other than these features, it has almost identical set of features from previous generation player.

Design

While the dimensions didn’t change too much from previous LG offerings, it does weigh little more. Aesthetically, BD550 has a glossy finished front plate with LCD and playback buttons located on the right side. You will need to flip down the face plate to access the buttons. The back of player includes all the connectivity. The connectivity includes Composite and component video out, HDMI, analog audio out, digital audio out, Ethernet port and USB port. It would have been nice to see another USB port in the front for easier access. The included remote was adequate. The remote does seem bit smaller than other remotes. If you have big hand, you might want to invest in a decent universal remote control. With LG’s SimpLink, you can control all the devices connected via HDMI with one remote control. This seems to be the trend among leading manufacturers.

Video and Performance

Performance wise, the booting and loading speed has seen some improvement over the last generation players. Still, it is nowhere near as fast as loading DVD in a DVD player. While not as fast as DVD loading times, BD550 did manage decent booting and loading time for Blu ray movies. While the overall speed of Blu ray disc wasn’t anything special, the internet applications were lightening fast. Loading time for YouTube or Netflix was lot faster than most other players.

The video imaging quality was on par with last year’s models. This isn’t to say it is bad. Instead, the previous generation LG players offered top notch image qualities. Testing Iron Man, the BD550 showed no imaging defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur. The image quality on BD550 and previous player showed no discernible difference. Overall, there is nothing wrong with the image quality of BD550.

Audio

The audio quality is also on par with previous generation player from LG. it handled all the audio format without a hitch. Different audio files played from USB drive were all as advertised. MP3 and AVCHD had no problem with the playback.

Overall

LG has produced another winner in BD550. Like the previous models from LG, it is fairly fast and loaded with features. The ability to play Divx as well as MKV files are a big plus. Most players, new and old, does not support Divx or MKV file formats. If I had one complaint, it is that remote control was not as good as it should have been. For under $150, this is very competent Blu ray player.

Review: LG BD270 Blu Ray Player

May 20, 2010

Companies usually release an entry level model followed by higher end model. For some reason, LG decided to release BD270 well after the release of BD370. LG received rave reviews for the BD370. Even today, it is considered one of the best players on the market. Released four months after BD370, BD270 is essentially a stripped down version of the popular BD370. LG was clearly trying to reach the entry level market with this model. Some of the sale prices for BD270 were under $100 during the holiday season. Even so, LG seemed to have failed in delivering the same quality player in BD270 as did with the BD370 model.

Features

A lot of core features present on BD370 were removed from the BD270. Two major exclusions were the Internet streaming and BD-LIVE support. The BD270 only supports Profile 1.1 titles. You will not be able to get access to the BD-LIVE contents on any of the new or old Blu ray movies. Since BD-LIVE content is delivered via internet, BD270 lacks Ethernet port or wireless functionality. BD270 is essentially a downgrade from BD370 or BD300. It is a Profile 1.1 player with full complement of audio decoding options. BD270 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. LG has at least managed to include onboard decoding of high definition audio formats. As stated earlier, BD270 lacks any internet streaming contents. Unlike BD370, BD270 buyers won’t have access to Netflix, Youtube, or CinemaNow contents.

Design

The overall design and finish is fairly simple compared to BD370. The LCD, playback buttons, and USB port is located on the right side of the player. The middle of the player is similar to BD370 with eject and power button placed on each side of Blu ray logo. The front face has a glossy finish compared to metallic finish for most other parts. The back of the player includes all the connectivity except for the USB. For Audio, Digital and coaxial is the only means to output audio besides HDMI. For non high definition output, composite video is available. Otherwise, the connectivity is pretty sparse compared to other players.

Performance and Video

The overall booting and loading time wasn’t too far off from other players. It was definitely an improvement over the first generation players. While not as fast BD370 or other players, it was definitely better than earlier players. As far as video processing, it had no problem handling the discs that it played. Video defects such as moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur were all absent from the player. I tried to test the player with three separate discs. However, only one played without any problem. The one disc would not even load while the other disc only showed first few minutes before crashing. The two discs were tested on different player and played without any problem. The BD270 seems to be very particular when it comes to playing a disc with some blemish. While not scratched or damaged, the disc was not in mint condition. This could have been the problem. If you have discs with minor scratches, BD270 will most likely not read the disc. Having said that, the one disc that played had no problem. It loaded fairly fast and played without any interruption.

Audio

The audio processing had no issue. All the formats decoded without any problem. The high definition audio formats all played without a hitch. As with other entry level players, the BD270 lacks any 5.1 or 7.1 channel analog audio output. While it is capable of decoding 7.1 channel via receiver, you won’t have any direct output from the BD270. The audio CDs had no problem playing on the player as well. Overall, the audio performance is as expected from any Blu ray player.

Overall Opinion

After BD370, BD270 is big letdown in terms of performance and features. The exclusion of BD-LIVE support as well as internet streaming was a back step backward even for an entry level player. With the latest generation players, you can expect both as well as other features on the entry level players. The step back from BD370 is puzzling as I don’t see anyone buying this over other comparably priced Blu ray players. Also, the player’s inability to play disc with very minor blemishes is very troubling. The firmware update helped in some instances. But, I didn’t see any improvement with the firmware update. The lack of internet connectivity also hampers the firmware update. You will need a disc to update firmware. Overall, I can’t recommend this player at this time. It is outdated and out featured by today’s standard. While it might have been good back in 2009, it is definitely not worth the purchase in 2010.

LG BD590 Blu Ray Player Review

May 12, 2010

The LG BD590 has achieved an exceptional feedback score at the most popular review sites on the Internet, averaging between 4.5/5 and 5/5 stars. This is absolutely incredible and honestly hard to achieve. If the feedback score is this exceptional, what's so special about it? Well, for starters, the LG BD590 has everything you could possibly want in a Blu-Ray DVD player.

Features

  • 250 GB Hard Drive
  • 802.11N Wireless Networking
  • HD BD Live
  • 1080 Pixel Resolution
  • Dolby Digital 7.1 Analog Output
  • True HD and dts-HD Sound Support
  • Quick Boot
  • Instant Tray Opening
  • Standard DVD Upscaling
  • USB Media Host
  • SimpLink Technology
  • Support
  • Support for All the Most Common Media Formats

Design

The design of the LG BD590 is similar to the other LG models before it. Both the 570 and 590 look quite similar but the real changes from the 570 to the 590 are in how the insides work.

Remote Control

The All In One remote control allows you to control all of your connected LG HDMI devices with just one remote. That's all the more reason to buy everything LG. If you own all LG devices, then being able to control them all with one remote will virtually eliminate the bother of losing remotes. Complete with lots of buttons to control the numerous functions, you can be sure you won't be without the ability to control the entire device.

Performance

The performance of this blu ray player is incredible. Fantastic boot up times, super fast tray opening, quick boot time and the 250 gigabyte hard drive are what really shine. Being able to store a load of downloaded content from the 802.11 wireless networking feature makes for a Blue-Ray DVD player that’s really worth the price tag! The access times of the hard drive are phenomenal as well, providing you with an instant way to access your favorite movies, videos, sound, photos and libraries. You can store whatever you want on the hard drive. If you can download it, you can store it. You can even rip all the CD's you play in your player onto the drive.

Problems

There are zero problems to speak of with this player. Everything about the blu ray DVD player works perfectly. If there was one thing we could change, we would include 3D Blu-Ray support. This technology hasn't quite caught on yet but if it does, we would make sure that everybody would get to try it out.

Overall Opinion

It's fast, efficient and allows you to store all your favorite files. It's just like a home PC with the ability to display cinema quality movies. It doesn't get any better than this. The $380.00 price tag is a step up from the 570 model but the included hard drive makes it all worth it. You'll be hard pressed to find a Blu-Ray DVD player with all of these features, an included hard drive and exceptional performance for the price. Have a good time shopping!

LG BD570 Review

May 11, 2010

LG continues to impress people with their lineup of electronics each and every year. They come out with new models, fantastic technologies and they do it better than most companies out there. LG has developed the BD570 to satisfy Blu Ray fanatics everywhere and the price is right for the mid-range, offering an impressive level of features and options for the cost involved.

Features

  • Built in 802.11N Wi-Fi Networking that Supports Streaming Video Sites Like CinemaNow and YouTube
  • Excellent Blu-Ray Image Quality
  • BD-P HD BD Live Support
  • 7.1 Channel Superior Audio Support
  • Instant Open Tray Feature
  • Quick Boot Time
  • DLNA support
  • Support for All of the Most Common File Formats and Codecs

Design

The profile is very slim and sleek. The front panel flips down to allow access to the USB port, the front panel controls and the blu ray drive itself. The Graphical User Interface is slick, featuring an ice cube type graphical design that allows for attractive and easy navigation of the internal dynamics. You will easily be able to fit this unit into any space that is designed to house a standard blu ray player. The machine weighs a total of 7 lbs, which is on course with most other players in its price range.

Remote Control

The remote on this unit is very extensive, featuring a large number of buttons and access to the Blue ray dvd players most accessed features. If you like remotes with a lot of buttons included, you'll love this one. The remote also has a raised center portion, making it easier to find the stop, play and pause functions. The remote has more features than other remotes from similar models in its class.

Performance

The disc load times and boot up speed is just a tiny bit slower than most other players in the same price range by just a hair. Blu ray player consumers who want a higher level of performance for their money may be willing to sacrifice this small delay in load up performance. Most people like this player and it scored quite well in its feedback scores for overall performance levels.

Problems

This product doesn't have 3D Blu-Ray capability. This won't present a problem for the majority of people as this technology is relatively new. It doesn't have the 7.1 analog output that other players have. This won't present a problem for most people either but it's nice to have. Other than that, this player is good!

Overall Opinion

We think this player is a good player option and worth the price. It is an upgraded version of a previous LG blu ray players and handles all of the processing requirements pretty well. You couldn't ask for much more for the price of the machine and there aren't any problems with any of the functions. Most people who own this unit are happy with its performance and overall it's a good buy.

LG BD390 Blu Ray Player Review

August 16, 2009

Blu-ray players are finally hitting their stride this year with very good performances to go along with lower prices. Even the “base” models are loaded with features and excellent performances. The higher end models from the major manufacturers are priced well below $400 mark. This is far lower than the previous generation players. LG’s high end model, BD390, is priced around $350 and is crammed with features. LG adds very nice features on top of the already very competent BD 370 model.

Features

LG was the first to introduce media streaming with the BD300. BD300 was the first player to incorporate Netflix streaming on the Blu-ray player. Since BD 300, most of the Blu-ray players have copied the media streaming capabilities with their player in one form or another. Some opted to use the Netflix streaming and some have opted to go with some other services. Most players already support plethora of features on top of Blu-ray playback functions. BD390 features includes the integrated WiFi capability, Netflix streaming, Youtube and CinemaNow streaming, and media playback via network connection similar to the Samsung’s new players. The Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are natively decoded via onboard decoder. Also, BD390 includes the 7.1 analog out output. You should have no problem with audio decoding with the BD390. As with other latest Blu-ray players, the BD 390 comes with 1GB of onboard storage. As expected, the BD390 will be fully compliant with Profile 2.0.

Design

LG continues the flush front panel design it utilized on the BD370 model. While you won’t mistake BD390 for BD370, the glossy finish and flush front panel are all part of the BD390’s design. With the panel design, the front looks less cluttered. The LCD sits in the central area and is not visible until information is displayed. The playback function buttons are located on the right side of the player. A plastic cover hides the front USB port at the far right side of the player. As with any other glossy finish, the material tend to be a dust and finger print magnate. Otherwise, it is fairly nice looking player. The back of the player houses all the connectivity. The component and 2 channel audio out is provided for the older television sets. The HDMI and RJ-45 are located next to optical and coaxial digital audio output ports. We would have liked another USB port but it is not a big drawback as you don’t need a WiFi dongle like Samsung player for WiFi functionality. The big addition over the BD370 model is the inclusion of the 7.1 channel analog audio output. If you own receiver with HDMI input, you might not consider this a big addition. Otherwise, it’s nice inclusion for people with older receivers.

Remote

The included remote is very functional remote. The layout is pretty good with directional buttons in the middle and the special function buttons separated by different colors. The playback function buttons are located below the special function buttons. The numeric buttons and other less used buttons are hidden beneath the sliding cover at the bottom of the remote. This was nice design feature as it hides away the seldom used buttons. I found this design to be really nice as it made the remote less cluttered. If you need to use the numeric buttons often, this might cause some hassle. But, most users will appreciate the out of sight numeric buttons.

Performance

There’s not too much to say about BD390’s performance. The video/image quality is superb like most other Blu-ray disc players. The new crops of players all have similar video/image quality in Blu-ray playback as well as DVD upscaling. BD390 performed flawlessly on all three Blu-ray titles. Batman Begins and Matrix discs showed no moiré or jaggie defects. All the action sequences displayed without any blocking or blurring artifacts. The less action intense title, Marley and Me, had no problem with colors or any other defects. The area of great improvement is the loading speed over the past LG players. Samsung players all improved greatly in loading times. The BD 390 also does great job with loading time improvement. It is nearly twice as fast as the previous generation players. The loading time used to be hideously long on older players with some player taking minute or so to load certain discs.

Audio

The audio quality greatly depends on the home theater setup. As such, it is important for the Blu-ray player to have good decoding and output options. The decoding quality is similar across many different manufacturers. BD390 handles all known decoding option and includes the 7.1 channel analog output for added bonus. The overall audio decoding quality was on par with other players.

Overall

I was very impressed with all the formats the player was able to decode. The BD 390 can decode MP3, JPEG, PNG, AVI, Divx, and MKV. MKV file containers are usually used for high definition encodings as well as great many formats. This is the first player that actually managed to decode MKV files without too much trouble. The media streaming capabilities were easier to set up than the Samsung version. The included software had no problem setting up the connection to the PC. The included streaming services are more than adequate to cover all the streaming needs. Youtube and Netflix are fairly well known video services. The CinemaNow is similar to Amazon Video on Demand service that offers new video releases for rental.

If I had to purchase a new Blu-ray player, this would be the player to get. It is packed with features and boasts some of the best performances. And, all this comes at relatively low price point of $350. This is a highly recommended player.
