Philips BDP5320 Blu Ray Player Review

December 9, 2010

Philips has quietly been surpassed by many other electronics companies in the Blu ray disc player market. Philips BDP5320 is a minimalist Blu ray disc player that is very affordable and functional. While not as feature packed as other mid range players, it does have essential features and functionality.

Features

The BDP5320 is a Profile 2.0 Blu ray player fully capable of displaying BD-LIVE contents. Improving upon their earlier models, the BDP5320 can natively decodes DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby True HD. While it can decode Dolby True HD, the BDP5320 cannot decode other high definition audio formats. The internet streaming contents are restricted to few streaming services via Netflix and Blockbuster on Demand. The newer Philips model comes with the Net TV access which is similar to internet streaming platform from Sony and Samsung. The inclusion of WiFi adapter was a pleasant surprise. The BDP5320 is capable of playing H.264 and Divx formats as well as the standard Blu ray and DVD formats. Also, it can display JPEG formats and MP3 audio formats.

Design

The overall design is fairly straight forward. You really can’t do too much in either direction. The LCD is located in the middle of the player while the LCD is located on the right side. The playback buttons are located on the left of the player. There is a SD card slot located on the far right side of the player. The BDP5320 comes with basic connectivity. There is the standard 2 channel analog audio output as well as 5.1 channel analog output. Composite and component video output is available as well as digital coaxial out. The standard HDMI and ethernet ports are included as well. The 1 USB port will most likely be occupied by the included Wireless LAN adaptor. Extra USB port would have been nice. The included remote control is a universal remote control capable controlling different home theater devices. With EasyLink, any devices connected via HDMI can be controlled via the included remote control.

Performance

As with previous models, Philips BDP5320 is a quick loading player. While not quite as fast as the newest players from Sony and Samsung, it is definitely step above the first and second generation players. The loading time from boot up to viewing a Blu ray movie was anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds depending on the disc. Also, all the BD-LIVE content played without any problems. Spot tested with 3 different Blu ray discs, the player showed no video processing errors in any scenes. Moiré, jaggieness, and motion blur were all absent during the playback. Tested with 2 DVD discs, the player had no problem handling the upscaling. The overall upscaling was on par with most other players in this price range.

Audio

I did have few complaints on the audio front. First, the player cannot natively decode DTS Master HD audio. Also, the lack of WMA, AAC, and SACD was disappointing. On the other hand, the overall audio playback was excellent. All the advertised audio decoded without any problems.

Overall

The overall performance of the BDP5320 was very adequate. At around $120, the BDP5320 is cheaper than most players. However, with little more money you can purchase far more complete player from Sony, Samsung, or LG. The lack of DTS Master HD audio decoding as well as second USB port was little disappointing. Also, the lack of more internet streaming content holds me back from recommending this player over other players in $150 range. If you need a very basic player for bedroom, this isn’t a bad player. However, if you want more complete player with more features, look for higher end models.

An Unbiased review: LG BX 580 Blu Ray Player

December 8, 2010

It was inevitable that 3D technology made its way into the consumer electronics. With more films being released in 3D format in conjunction with non 3D formats in theater, it was an easy decision for consumer electronics makers to manufacture 3D capable home theater systems. In the past, 3D technology usually meant wearing the cheap blue and red paper or plastic glasses. Now, the 3D glasses incorporate active shuttle system that syncs with your television sets to display amazing 3D images. While Sony and Samsung were quick to introduce 3D capable Blu ray players, LG was little bit late to the 3D market. However, LG has built up a nice reputation for delivering very solid Blu ray players. The BX 580 is another impressive Blu ray player LG.

Features

The LG BX 580 is packed with features found on most high end models. With the standardization of Profile 2.0, consumers can forgo any worries on Blu ray feature compatibilities. Unless you are buying older models, the Blu ray player will certainly be a Profile 2.0 player. The LG BX 580 is a Profile 2.0 player compatible with all of the Blu ray disc features including the 3D contents. As expected, the LG BX 580 supports all audio formats found on Blu ray discs. It is capable of decoding Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio and LPCM. On top of the regular Blu ray format and DVD format, the BX580 is capable of playing Xvid, VC-1, and MKV formats. Also, the BX580 is capable of playing WMA, MP3, SACD, and AAC audio formats. The BX580 comes with many extra contents. The LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access includes Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow, Pandora, Picasa, AccuWeather, and YouTube with internet connection. The integration of WiFi is nice bonus for people with wireless networking. With NetCast Entertainment Access you should be well covered for all internet services. Like other new Blu ray players, LG has opted to phase out the multi channel analog output in favor HDMI only solution. The BX580 is also DNLA certified for easy integration of other DLNA certified devices.

Design

Design wise, the LG BX580 is a beautiful looking player. Overall, the player has flush design without any raised or recessed buttons. The front face plate and overall player has nice glossy finish for elegant look. The front face hides the disc tray as well as the hidden LCD on the right side. The back of the player houses all the connectivity. The connectivity includes composite and component video out as well as the standard HDMI output. The player also comes with Analog audio out as well as optical and coaxial digital output. Even with WiFi, BX580 comes with Rj-45 port. The player does come with 1 USB 2.0 input for pictures and various other media formats. Overall, you shouldn’t have problem with any connectivity issues. The multichannel analog output is the only connectivity missing from this player.

Performance

The big improvement from first generation to second generation players was the overall picture and feature improvements. From second to third generation, manufacturers concentrated on loading time improvements. Now, most of the players have combined all these improvements including the BX580. The loading time is lightening fast. You will not need to sit through 45 seconds from power up to watch a Blu ray movie. Some Java intensive disc used to have problems on the older Blu ray players. This player has no such problem. All the Java contents loaded fast and without any compatibility problems.

As with all the Blu ray players, I updated to the latest firmware before testing out the internet contents. LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access performed as advertised. Netflix and CinemaNow had no problem connecting to the internet and streaming contents. Also, the weather service and YouTube loaded without any problems. The only downside was setting up the DLNA. I did encounter some odd connectivity problem. Powering down the player and router solved the problem after the powering both devices.

Overall, the video processing was flawless. Playing through 2 movies showed no problems. The usual processing defects like moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur were all absent. Unfortunately, I was not able to test the 3D content as you need a television set capable of displaying the 3D images. With the newest players, you should expect flawless picture quality. BX580 was no exception.

Audio

The sound quality was as expected. All the sound formats played without any hitch. The aforementioned lack of multichannel analog output might be problem for people with receivers that need them. The MP3 and various other music formats played correctly off the USB drive without any problems. Overall, the sound format covered by BX580 was impressive.

Overall

The LG BX580 player is an excellent addition to the critically acclaimed LG Blu ray players. While LG did take longer to bring out the 3D model, it was definitely worth the wait. The exceptional performance of non 3D functionality alone makes it worth buying even if you don’t own a 3D television. Once you decide to upgrade to 3D television, you will have excellent Blu ray player capable of handling any 3D contents available today.

A Review of Portable Blu Ray Player: Samsung BD-C8000

December 8, 2010

The Samsung BD-C8000 is Samsung’s attempt at the portable Blu ray player market. While portable DVD market was fairly large, portable Blu ray player market has yet to establish itself. Every other minivan with little kid had a portable DVD player. Samsung and few other manufacturers are banking on Blu ray format taking off and hoping to grab the portable DVD market.

Features

The BD-C8000 is a Profile 2.0 player full compatible with BD-LIVE and other Profile 2.0 contents. The player can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS, and DTS HD audio formats. Like other new Samsung Blu ray players, the BD-C8000 comes with the Samsung App for internet streaming contents. You can stream movies from Netflix and Vudu. For television series, you can download Hulu Plus app and watch television shows from ABC, Fox, and NBC. You also have access to Pandora and YouTube as well as USA Today and AccuWeather feeds for news and weather. There are various other apps like gaming and other news feeds. You can pick and choose which apps you want to load on the player. The BD-C8000 comes with built in WiFi function.

Design

The BD-C8000’s dimension is smaller than other Blu ray players for obvious reasons. Measuring in at 10.91" x 7.6" x 1.41", the player is quite a bit smaller than conventional Blu ray players. On the other hand, it weighs in at 3.7 lbs. The heavy weight is due to the screen and the internal battery. As expected, there are only few connectivity available on the BD-C8000. It comes with 2 channel audio output, optical and digital audio output, USB, and HDMI port.

Performance

The 10.1 inch screen is very nice to look at. Overall resolution of 1024x600 is adequate for portable viewing. The overall resolution does not meet the 1080p requirement. You will miss out on the full potential of the Blu ray movies in most cases. Rated at three hours, you will barely have enough time to watch a Blu ray movie before you need to recharge the unit or use the AC power cord. While rated at 3 hours, I found the overall average to be around 2.5 hours in most cases. The overall playback did offer very solid experience. Like other Samsung players, the load time was lightening fast and the playback offered no video processing defects. Using a Blu ray movie, the BD-C8000 displayed no moiré, jaggieness, or motion blurs. The DVD upscaling was spot on as well. While it did have the usual upscaling effects, the DVD upscaling was nice on the portable screen as well as large HDTV screens. If you have a 3D television, the BD-C8000 is capable of displaying 3D image. You will need HDMI 1.4 compliant cable to use this feature.

Audio

The audio decoding had no problems. All the listed audio formats decoded without any hitch. However, the built in speakers were less than impressive. It sounded weak and hollow at times. You will want to invest in a decent headset or ear buds for better audio performance. The audio output had no problem when played through receiver.

Overall

While the 10.1 inch screen is nice addition over most other portable DVD players, I cannot really recommend any portable Blu ray player at this moment. You will never fully realize the potential of Blu ray movies in resolution or in sound in portable format. While it is nice to be able to connect the player to your home theater, it is not practical for most people. Also, the built in speakers are not that great and you will end up investing in a good headset to compensate for it. Overall, stick with portable DVD players if you want a portable player.
