Review: LG BD270 Blu Ray Player
May 20, 2010
Companies usually release an entry level model followed by higher end model. For some reason, LG decided to release BD270 well after the release of BD370. LG received rave reviews for the BD370. Even today, it is considered one of the best players on the market. Released four months after BD370, BD270 is essentially a stripped down version of the popular BD370. LG was clearly trying to reach the entry level market with this model. Some of the sale prices for BD270 were under $100 during the holiday season. Even so, LG seemed to have failed in delivering the same quality player in BD270 as did with the BD370 model.
Features
A lot of core features present on BD370 were removed from the BD270. Two major exclusions were the Internet streaming and BD-LIVE support. The BD270 only supports Profile 1.1 titles. You will not be able to get access to the BD-LIVE contents on any of the new or old Blu ray movies. Since BD-LIVE content is delivered via internet, BD270 lacks Ethernet port or wireless functionality. BD270 is essentially a downgrade from BD370 or BD300. It is a Profile 1.1 player with full complement of audio decoding options. BD270 can natively decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. LG has at least managed to include onboard decoding of high definition audio formats. As stated earlier, BD270 lacks any internet streaming contents. Unlike BD370, BD270 buyers won’t have access to Netflix, Youtube, or CinemaNow contents.
Design
The overall design and finish is fairly simple compared to BD370. The LCD, playback buttons, and USB port is located on the right side of the player. The middle of the player is similar to BD370 with eject and power button placed on each side of Blu ray logo. The front face has a glossy finish compared to metallic finish for most other parts. The back of the player includes all the connectivity except for the USB. For Audio, Digital and coaxial is the only means to output audio besides HDMI. For non high definition output, composite video is available. Otherwise, the connectivity is pretty sparse compared to other players.
Performance and Video
The overall booting and loading time wasn’t too far off from other players. It was definitely an improvement over the first generation players. While not as fast BD370 or other players, it was definitely better than earlier players. As far as video processing, it had no problem handling the discs that it played. Video defects such as moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur were all absent from the player. I tried to test the player with three separate discs. However, only one played without any problem. The one disc would not even load while the other disc only showed first few minutes before crashing. The two discs were tested on different player and played without any problem. The BD270 seems to be very particular when it comes to playing a disc with some blemish. While not scratched or damaged, the disc was not in mint condition. This could have been the problem. If you have discs with minor scratches, BD270 will most likely not read the disc. Having said that, the one disc that played had no problem. It loaded fairly fast and played without any interruption.
Audio
The audio processing had no issue. All the formats decoded without any problem. The high definition audio formats all played without a hitch. As with other entry level players, the BD270 lacks any 5.1 or 7.1 channel analog audio output. While it is capable of decoding 7.1 channel via receiver, you won’t have any direct output from the BD270. The audio CDs had no problem playing on the player as well. Overall, the audio performance is as expected from any Blu ray player.
Overall Opinion
After BD370, BD270 is big letdown in terms of performance and features. The exclusion of BD-LIVE support as well as internet streaming was a back step backward even for an entry level player. With the latest generation players, you can expect both as well as other features on the entry level players. The step back from BD370 is puzzling as I don’t see anyone buying this over other comparably priced Blu ray players. Also, the player’s inability to play disc with very minor blemishes is very troubling. The firmware update helped in some instances. But, I didn’t see any improvement with the firmware update. The lack of internet connectivity also hampers the firmware update. You will need a disc to update firmware. Overall, I can’t recommend this player at this time. It is outdated and out featured by today’s standard. While it might have been good back in 2009, it is definitely not worth the purchase in 2010.

Won’t Play Blu-Ray
Pro:
Plays DVD
Con:
Won’t play the first Blu-Ray I tried…. keeps getting stuck or rejecting disk completely, even after firmware update. It’s a brand new disk.

If I could rate it lower I would have
don’t buy this Blu ray player, no matter what you do. mine failed outside the three month (THREE MONTH!) warranty. this is a waste of money, it skipped and stuttered , which I thought I could put up with . but a 5 month old Blu ray player should not have to be replaced. this is not a deal by any means. I’m trying the deal I saw at a certain website that starts with D and ends in ell. I’ll never buy LG again.

Pay extra $$$ to get quality
Wanted a Blu ray player to compliment my HD viewing, after sending one defective unit back to Amazon because it would lock up I was sent a replacement unit. What I got was a unit that sometimes works, sometimes not. I am a netflix subsciber and only am able to play about 50% of movies I recieve. Called LG for customer service and they were going to send me a firmware update and never did, called them back and now they want me to send in for service. Save yourself a lot of headaches and buy anything but a LG. It is cheap quality. All movies that would not play on my LG played just fine on my Sons PS3.

Better not have any scratches or your dvd’s wont play . . .
I bought this on the after thanksgiving day sale. I was so excited to have a blu ray player but this has been nothing but a disappointment. It skips if there is even the smallest scratch or bit of dust. I really wish I could have returned this.

Avatar will not play? The solution is here
I could not get avatar to play on my LG BD270. I downloaded their firmware upgrade [ [...] ] and it now plays fine. The upgrade also seems to have fixed the problem of fast forewarding and the machine would skip or stop. I downloaded the fix today and all has been well since then. I purchased my LG BD270 at Thanksgiving.

Poor Quality, Will Not Last
Do not buy this unit. It will work very well for about 4 months, then you will have signal problems. The movie signal will cut out after about 5 minutes, and your tv will say “no signal.” You can pull out the HDMI cable and reinsert, and you will get a signal for about 3 minutes, then no signal. Repeat. And the warranty is over after 3 months–do not be fooled. After three months, you must pay a minimum $65 “labor” fee to have it fixed. But the “parts” are free, so they mislead you and tell you the warranty is longer. Avoid.

LG is worthless
LG (Life’s Good) is appears to be “Lacking Gratitude” towards its customers. I, too, purchased my LG BD270 between Thanksgiving and Christmas and am now experiencing the same issues that not only many here on Amazon are experiencing, but on other consumer review sites. It is apparent that LG is very much aware of this issue since many of you have called and maybe even sent in the money for the repairs only to find out that it is a simple programming update that is not supported in the current firmware update.
I just called LG again to give them another chance to fix my unit without charge since they are aware of this issue and that it is a manufacturing/programming error. The response I got is the $69 fee (funny that we all get quoted different prices for the same issue) goes to tech support to run a diagnostic test on the unit. There is no need to run the test when the issue is a common one that has already been acknowledged by them. I do not know why they just do not post the firmware update on their site to fix this issue. (Yes, I have downloaded and installed the most current firmware update from their, but still no luck. It is not the correct update to fix the problem.)
Until LG can fix this issue, I highly recommend against buying this product. Given my treatment and their practices in this matter, I would think twice about buying a LG product of any kind. Even Apple, who has a similar 90 day free tech support and 1 year warranty, understands when the issue is on their end will own up to it and fix the problem without charge. $69 for a test on a unit that cost me $99 just does not seem right. Looks like I am going to find a better company.
***Update: After much fighting, I was able to get LG to waive their $69 fee. Sending in the unit today to see what happens. Post back when I get it returned to let you know if it works.***

Very Disappointed….
We decided to buy this player because it was on sale after thanksgiving (2009). So far we’ve had nothing but problems… Any blu-ray discs that require a firmware update do not play. They pop out with a message saying “error” and won’t even attempt to load. Other discs freeze during play and don’t unfreeze (so it’s not waiting to load, it just locks up). You have to unplug the unit to fix the freeze. We contacted LG and were told they would send a firmware disc to update the player. Over a month goes by without any disc being sent to the house, so we call again to complain. Oh, they forgot, it was never sent. Finally the disc arrives and doesn’t work. Nothing is updated so we call yet again. They say we’re beyond our warranty and that in order for them to do anything they want $70 (which is over half way to a new player, in which case we’d buy a different one). They were very careful to not send the update disc until we were pushed just beyond the period of service. With much argument, we got them to agree to look at it without the fee. After being serviced, it came back in the mail today and still doesn’t work. Forth call to LG and they said they’ll only take another look, no replacement. We’re not impressed….
Terrible customer service, terrible player, spend the extra $20 and get the Sony! Friends have it and love it. I wish we would have.

Piece of crap.
I unfortunately bought this player on Black Friday and it started giving out about the end of March. Just like all the other 1 star reviews on this player, I called LG several times and they troubleshot me to no avail. Their final answer was for me to send it in for repairs for the cost of $69.00, I PAID $99 for the thing so no, i’m not sending it back…it plays regular DVDs beautifully and upconverts very well but does NOT play blurays anymore. I’ve updated the software and nothing. Very VERY disappointed with LG, I’ve been very brand loyal (my LCD tv, ALL my phones, my microwave, my refrigerator) but I think this might put a stop to it. I’ve let all my facebook friends know not to buy this if they’re in the market for a bluray player. There needs to be a recall on this LEMON of a bluray player. BEWARE, do NOT purchase this.

Useless after the first firmware update
I liked this LG Blu Ray player until I bought a newer Blu Ray that required a firmware update. I downloaded the update from LG’s website and read LG’s poor excuse for a readme file. The player reported ‘update successful’ and I was able to play my new Blu Ray. Then the next day the thing won’t even boot properly into the home menu (which is required in order to update firmware). LG needs to pull this thing off the shelves and replace it before their brand reputation gets flushed.

Quality at a Great Price
I bought this blu-ray player for my parents for Christmas. I wanted something affordable as well as functional. This player had a great price and better reviews than some of the other less expensive players, so I bought it. It works great. It was easy to set up, use, and has a great picture. Now keep in mind this is just a basic blu-ray player, that’s all it is going to do is play movies. There is no internet and no Netflix. If you are just looking something to play blu-ray movies and don’t care about the other frills that will cost you a lot more, then this player is an excellent buy.

Beware
This worked great out of the box for about 2 months, but all of sudden, it locks up while playing blu-rays. It still has no problem with DVD’s. If I leave it turned off for a while, it seems to be less finicky when playing blu-rays, but that doesn’t work all the time and in the end, it shouldn’t matter. I’d go somewhere else no matter what the cost. I’m already thinking about replacing this one.

Questionable quality?
I bought this player on an impulse. Had the money, wanted a Bluray player so ordered what seemed to be a good deal with only a half hour of research online. Not always the best to buy something without doing a study on the technology and what’s available. With that said, this didn’t turn out to be terrible. For the money, it wasn’t bad, so far.
With that said, the bluray video playback looks pretty good. I got a few Bluray movies from Netflix that played the previews fine but would not start the movie. When I upgraded to the latest firmware, that problem was fixed. As some have mentioned, the unit runs hot but not terribly hot as some indicated. The top gets warm to the touch. There are vent holes on the top so with this unit you do not want to have any other device stacked on top of it. It needs the free air ventilation. It did smell on the first day after a movie or two ( as others said it did) but that smell went completely away after that first day of use.
The up converting of regular DVDs is grainy and not near the quality of my old “HD” DVD player/up converting. I think this is my biggest disappointment with the player is that it doesn’t up convert very well. Sure it’s 1080P but there is a lot of noise in the picture vs. Bluray or my Toshiba HD up converting player using regular DVDs.
Bottom line, it plays Bluray disks well but it plays regular DVDs with noise in the picture.
I will update if my experience with the player changes.
Update 4-2-2010:
I connected the Bluray player to my sound system via the RCA outputs and found that the audio cuts in and out and pops when the audio comes back after restarting a pause of the video. It pops so loud, I’m afraid it will ruin my speakers. This does not occur when using the audio for the HDMI. It appears to be only the RCA analog audio output. I’ve figured out that the analog audio output shuts down on quiet scenes of the movie like when people are talking low or other low volume scenes or when the movie is paused for more than 5 seconds. When it the audio level comes back up in the movie, there is a huge POP noise. I’m sure all units do this as most people don’t use the analog audio output. Would be interesting to see if another owner could confirm this problem. With that said, I’ve decided to send the unit back for a refund. I won’t by an LG for the replacement. I think I’m just going to get a PlayStation since it’s only $100 more than the Sony Bluray player that I was going to replace the LG with. 100 dollars more for the ability to play games in addition to watch Bluray seems worth it.
Update 5-8-2010
I decided not to send the unit back after talking to LG customer support. They said there were updates that were not on thier web site and said they would mail them to me. I recieved two disks from LG. There is one labeled BD.8.16.059.A and another labeled HL06P. No instuctions so I put in the first one and sure enough, it was a higher rev than the one I downloaded from the LG site. The disk updated the player “SW Version” from BD.8.08.021 to BD.8.08.24B. I let it update then put in the second disk. It updated the player “Driver Version” from BD61540 to BD61560. The unit works much better now. No wierd audio popping noise and the disks play great. I increased my rating of the player from 2 stars to 3 stars. It is kind of disappointing they they didn’t have these updates online and that it took over 2 weeks to get the disks but the unit does work much better now. I hope this info helps someone else.

A Lemon
Please, do yourself a favor, don’t buy this LEMON. The LG BD270 blue-ray player is a piece of caca.
When I first bought it on 11/30/09 it worked fine, it played some blue-ray DVDs by fits and starts. So I decided to solve the problem by updating its firmware at the LG website. No problem, I did that, and it started playing some blue-ray DVDs for a while.
The next day it played none of the blue-ray DVDs I fed it, despite the fact that my brother’s SONY was able to easily play the same blue-rays.
Today I called LG at the number painted on the unit and I was told that, since the unit is still under the 90 day warranty, I can send it back to be repaired–for the nominal fee of 69 dollars. Taking into account that I paid 119 dollars for it and that the unit currently retails in some sites for $94, I would be mad to keep throwing good money after bad.

Not worth it.
I bought this bluray player on November 25th, 2009 – from Amazon.
It worked good, had decent bluray and upconverting dvd playback, quiet, the load times wasn’t bad either.
The reason why I rated it so low is simply there’s no value in buying this. It comes with a 1year warranty for parts, and 90 day warranty for labor. The player stopped playing bluray discs on 3/21/10. It will still play dvds, but whenever I put any bluray in, it will sit there for at least 10 minutes, then eject the disc and have a error on screen saying “check disc.”
I gave LG a call, talked to their support department, they told me that it has to be sent in for repair and the cost to repair it is $65. They claim because its not covered by the labor warranty I have to pay for their labor to fix it. I told them its better to buy a new one and stop buying lg products instead.
This is a warning to anyone planning to buy bluray players – always make sure your warranty coverts parts and labor for a full year. I saw a 1year warranty but didn’t realize they would screw me on the labor cost.
If I could find 3yr warranty bluray players I would buy that instead, but it seems like no company wants to stand behind their products for that long.

Was dissapointed, returned it
I bought this on black Friday because it was for sale on Amazon for $99. Initially I was very happy with it, it’s simple, easy to set up, and upconverted DVDs well. I knew it didn’t have netflix or any other online streaming when I bought it so that obviously wasn’t an issue (I used a Roku for that).
I started running into problems with Blu Rays rented from Netflix. Even on the new releases where I’m sure I was the first person to view the movie they would sometimes not start up and require me to turn off and then turn the player back on again. Sometimes they would jam part way through the movie. Anyways it was very frustrating and I decided that perhaps I needed a better quality player and get the Sony BDP-N460 on Amazon for $180. I am much happier with the Sony, I know that LG is usually great quality and my LCD TV is an LG but maybe I got a lemon with this player. Bottom line I would not recommend it, I think with Blu Ray since it’s a Sony invention stick with Sony players for now.

A GREAT BASIC BLU-RAY PLAYER
I am very happy with this blu-ray player. I really like that it lets me view blu-ray movies at an affordable price of around $100.
Although it does not provide the same features as other players (BD Live, Netflix or Amazon on Demand), the cost reflects this lack of options. This system plays blu-ray movies and that’s it. Personally, I am happy to let a year or two go by and wait for all the great and innovative features that are being packaged into blu-ray players and then purchase one at a higher price. In the meanwhile, I get to enjoy the blu-ray enhanced movie experience this player provides.
This players keeps it’s place in the movie, whether paused for long periods or turned off but it will not remember your place if the disc is removed from the player and then returned. Last week, it took a few tries to turn the player off. The power just would not shut off but then it turned itself off after a minute. This might be due to little fingers pressing the button to quickly and repeatedly. All seems fine a week later with no further issues.
I would recommend this basic player for people who want to enjoy blu-ray movies but not those with Netflix subscriptions or Amazon on Demand fans. Also, it will not allow you to enjoy the BD Live function found on some discs (allows you more access to the movie and cool interactive features).

be careful with this LG270
Nice looking small unit, but it is junk. The Sound stopped working 23 minutes into my first Blu-Ray movie. Even after updating to the latest software. I also thought it was going to catch on fire from the smell of electrical components getting way to hot half way through the first movie. I thought I would be lucky and get a good one but these should all be recalled. I have a LG370 and it works great but this LG270 has serious issues. I am returning to Amazon today. BE CAREFUL!!!

Don’t buy it!
Freeze Frame. This unit won’t play Blu-ray discs. From the very first movie I played I encountered a random frozen image and had to unplug the unit to get it to turn off so I could turn it on to remove the disc. I even polished the disc with a professional disc polisher. It isn’t the disc, it’s this player!
I didn’t set up the unit right away so now my 90 days of labor are over. From reading other reviews and the trouble the reviewers have had, I’m not going to bother with LG support. Maybe Amazon will help. I expected more from LG. Had a Panasonic VCR once that was crap like this. Will never buy Panasonic again. I guess I’ll add LG to the “never” list.

Love it, Should’ve Bought Netflix Model Though
This thing works great. I liked the price and was scared away from the Netflix models because of some people saying you needed some sort of superb internet speed for movie viewing. I now know that standard cable internet is plenty fast for high quality movie viewing because I’ve since purchased the top of the line ROKU. SO, I wish I would’ve bought the Netflix model. Other than that nothing wrong with this.

Below is my letter to the President of LG USA…
=========================
Mr. Wayne Park
1000 Sylvan Avenue
Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey 07632
Dear Mr. Park:
Recently I purchased a LG Blu-ray DVD player, model BD270 from Amazon. The unit doesn’t function. I had the opportunity to return the product to Amazon at no cost to me but instead unwisely decided to call LG customer support to get the issue resolved.
To say that it has been a frustrating and time consuming ordeal would be putting things mildly.
Below, I provide you a history of my calls to LG and a summary of the discussion:
Date and Time n(EST) LG Representative Discussion
1/25/2010 @ 5:45 pm Mr. Darryl Provided details of issue; Case # CNM10012538862 assigned; I am told that a return label will be emailed to me in 24 hrs so LG can repair the unit.
1/26/2010 @ Evening Ms. Monica I inquire why I haven’t received the return label. Monica tells me that the model number was incorrectly entered as BD300 instead of BD270. She corrects it and tells me that a return label will be emailed to me in 24 hrs.
1/28/2010 @ Evening Ms. Gina I inquire why I haven’t received the return label. Gina tells me that it will be emailed to me in 3 to 5 business days and not 24 hours. She tells me that I was misinformed.
2/1/2010 @ 5:40 pm Mr. Victor I inquire why I haven’t received the return label after 5 days. Victor tells me that Wendy will email the label immediately.
2/2/2010 @ Evening Ms. Nicki I call back to inform LG that I have received the label but the model number on the label is incorrectly noted as BD300. Nicki now tells me that I do not have to send in my machine, and LG will send me a firmware upgrade in 7 to 10 business days. I express my complete frustration; and indicate that I will be write to the president of LG to complain. Later I get a call from LG to call back.
2/3/2010 @ Evening Mr. Victor I call back, and I’m informed that I have a new case number CNM100203523335 assigend; and that I need to send my machine in for a firmware upgrade; and that I will receive a return label in 24 hrs
After I received a new return label, I immediately send the machine in for repairs. The machine is returned to me on 2/15/2010, but the problem has not been resolved. I place a call back to LG and speak to Ms. Nicki, who informs me that she has informed her supervisor who will research the issue and get back to me. She cannot give me a time frame for the LG response; but that I should keep checking.
This is my first experience with the LG brand and it’s a terrible experience. I suspect my case is not unique and many of LG’s customers are probably going through similar frustrating transactions. Perhaps you are not aware of this situation, and me taking this very unusual step of writing to you will hopefully put in place some needed remedies. It is my anger at having to deal with a completely incompetent crew that has compelled me to write this note, a first time for me. You can understand why I will not be buying another LG product in the future or speak favorably of LG.
Sincerely,

Great single-function Blu-Ray player
I purchased the LG BD270 because it hit a price point that I wanted to get a name-brand blu-ray player at. So far I have not been disappointed. I didn’t need the ability to stream from this player as I would just use my Xbox 360 for that. This does have some other features/options which I haven’t played with. All I wanted was a blu-ray player and this has performed this role perfectly. The HDMI runs through my Onkyo receiver and the picture and sound is as good/better than what I could expect for an entry-level machine. If you want a HD disc player which can decode HD sound, you can’t go wrong with the BD270!

Customer Service says I’m crazy
My unit will not turn off the subtitles, regardless of what setting it is on. After checking all possible menu’s and settings, verifying they were off, and trying 5 different DVD’s, all with the same problem, I called customer service. They informed me that what I said was happening, was not. I offered to send them a picture of the display indicating subtitles were off, and yet they were on the screen at the same time. They said no, what I said was happening was simply not possible. Seems one of us has a credibility problem, and since I am the chump stuck with a defective unit, it must be me.
Cannot possibly buy anything from LG again if this is how I will be treated.
