The Sylvania NB530SLX is both affordable and highly rated among consumers. If you look on the popular review sites like Amazon.com and CNET, you will see that it has scored comparatively high in both of their rating systems. This led us to take a closer look at the plyaer to review it ourselves, giving you a chance to make a smart purchase as a consumer. This blu ray player is definitely worth it and it has the feedback scores to back it up.

Design
The design of the Sylvania NB530SLX is relatively slim and very attractive. You could easily fit this unit in any small space that is designed to hold a DVD player, VCR or similar playback device. The back of the unit is designed to efficiently make use of wiring without causing any problems. The opening for the blu ray drive is positioned on the right hand side and we thought making a note of this would be a good idea. The open/close, stop, play and pause buttons are conveniently located on the middle and left hand side of the units face, making for easy control of the most frequently used playback functions.
Remote Control
The remote control has the basic functions that most remote controls for blu-ray players come with, including all the most commonly used playback functions like open/close, stop, play and pause. You can also access the menu selections from the remote as well.
Performance
Imagine it, a stunning 24 frames per second of incredibly cinematic action that looks amazingly explosive and exciting. While affordable, this Blu-Ray DVD player is far from average.
Problems
This unit can be described as a great entry level player, but it's far from revolutionary. If you are looking for higher end players, the ones that cost upwards of 500 dollars, this is not the player for you. Being able to bring competitive display features in such a basic package is commendable but this unit lacks the intensity of its more expensive counterparts.
There is also the necessity of updating the firmware from time to time. If you are not into updating your device in order to save some money, then again, this player is not for you. But for those of you who are willing to undergo the updates, this player is priced so incredibly low that it makes the process well worth it.

I like this piece of technology
It’s a great piece of technology but it’s a little slow to load. Now I hear that these machines need firmware updates off of the internet. I need to look into this.

Good Basic BlueRay Player
I am pretty well satisfied with this player. It works well and is a good economical choice.
However, it is pretty slow to load BlueRay disks. The picture is great, but I don’t see very much difference between the BlueRay picture and the upscaled regular DVD at 1080p. It is easy to use and setup was very easy. It works!!

Can’t beat the price and quality.
I bought this player based off the reviews here and paid $99 for it, and definetly worth the price and more. Picture and sound looks just as good as my ps3, which seems to be the best bluray out there. I would recommend as a main player and bedroom player as I am using it for. Easy to setup and I hear it isn’t necessary for a firmware update but I did it anyway. Just go to[...] and it will tell you how to get the latest update. Just follow the directions (very easy) by burning onto a cd and takes a few minutes to work. Mine updated and has played beautifully since. Nice looking player, I have already recommended for my budget conscious friends. I recommend a ps3 but if you don’t care for video games, then this is the only standalone that I can recommend. You can’t beat the price. 1080P and the upconvering via hdmi cable is great. I recommend purchasing an hdmi cable via the internet, just google around and there are many cheap ones for under $10 a piece. Avoid the expensive ones at the store and the big brands are no different than the no names, just an FYI. You won’t be disappointed by the purchase, and I probably will purchase another one in the near future.

A GOOD PLAYER FOR A 1ST TIME BLU-RAY BUYER
I received this Blu-Ray player free with purchase of my LCD flat planel TV, so it was a no-brainer for me to get it. As others have said, it is a very basic player and I totally agree with the comments (slow to load BDs, pain to download/install firmware updates, no internet connectivity). Having said that, I’ve had mine for 10 months and use it very frequently, with absolutely no problems to date. If you can get it for $60. (as others say they have) and you don’t need/want the internet connectivity, I think this is a smart purchase.

Pretty godd with some minor flaws
We got two pf these at a great price. Picture quality is superb. Same with the sound. Only two things that stand out as being not too good. Took a LONG TIME for it to
start up Avatar. It’s the first disc that was ever placed in it, but it took it literally 3 minutes before I even saw the main menu for the disc. Just a load screen before that. Hoping it was just maybe loading something new into the machine (like a PS3). Then this… I looked at the remote, and it was all scratched up. It was a used remote packed with (from what I could tell) a new player. NOT COOL! There were finger prints on it before I even took it out of the bag that it came in! All in all it’s a decent player. Just wish I had a new remote. I still haven’t opened to other. A little scared to see if it’s another used remote or not.

Price was right… no warranty, no LAN hook up
i wish this thing hooked up to the internet… its out dated already. I was being cheap and this blu ray player looked good. It is a good player for the price but i wish i put a little more money into it. it works. its fine.

Works OK as basic player
I bought this player for $60 at Amazon and it works as a blu-ray player. However
(1) You must download the firmware update and burn it for this player.
(2) In order to view the top menu of a dvd/blu-ray disk you must stop playing the disk!
(3) Player does not display that it is connected to a 5.1 channel receiver (Yamaha YSP-4000) although it does output 5.1 data.

Nothing Special
The only reason I bought this was because of the very low price. I wasn’t looking for a lot of bells and whistles, so this was just fine. All I wanted was a player to hook up to my television to watch movies. Hooking it up was easy, it plays the movie, and I am happy.

Great first-time Blu-Ray DVD player
This is the first Blu-Ray player we have owned so I have nothing to compare it to. I hooked it up and it started working perfectly. The upconvert seems perfect and our blu-rays look great. About the only minor complaint is that it appears the “automatic” selection to determine if it is 480i/p 720p or 1080i/p doesn’t seem to always choose the right one. If it doesn’t you have to stop the movie and then set it from what I can tell. Also, Blu-Rays seem to take about 10-15 seconds to load but I’m guessing that’s not too bad. Regular DVDs load much faster than my previous DVD player. I would buy it again and if there is a $69 deal from Amazon again, I’m getting a 2nd one.

Very nice Blu-ray player!
I really like this unit! I got it for a great price. Everyone has spoken about the load time and low value remote control. They are right, however for the price, I am fine with this! The picture is great and the sound is perfect! I used HDMI cable and digital cable for sound. Makes for a great home theater experience!

GREAT DEAL
I purchased this Blu-Ray for the price. I got it for $59.99 and had no expectations that the quality would be astonishing. If I find a great deal, even if I don’t need the item immediately, I will purchase it for later use. I put it in the closet and immediately upon discovery my husband discarded the DVD player and hooked it up. Now he is hooked on the Blu-Ray. The picture quality is solid!

Great Blu-ray player for the price
At $60, this was a terrific bargain. It does take “forever” to load a blu-ray disc, but the picture and sound are excellent. It does a great job of upconverting dvd’s so it’s not worth upgrading dvds that were good transfers.

Awesome machine!
Got in on a great $59.95 deal on this and was worried about the slow loading other reviewers talked about. Well my Panasonic standard dvd plyer takes more time to read a dvd than this blu ray does! I’ve had it for a month now and it has worked flawlessly, and we use it daily. A great purchase.

WOW. You get what you pay for. Played 15 minutes of the first bluray
Bought it real cheap on Amazon. Played the first 15 minutes of the first bluray I played on it and then froze. Could not play any more blu rays on it but could play them just fine on other bluray players. Amazingly, it continues to play DVDs just fine… Tried to download firmware updates but they are non-existent…

I might be easily pleased and only need the basics. This DVD player does everything I need. Does it at a very affordable price. Maybe not the best DVD on the market but I get a quality picture and I kept some money in my pocket. So all in all, I’m happy with this DVD and that’s what matters to me.

Great Blu-ray player
This was a really great deal, the picture is great, easy to set up and very easy to use. I have seen complaints about the time it takes to load, it takes longer than a regurlar DVD but not as long as my son’s player for which he paid a considerable sum. I am very very happy with this purchase.
